media temple virtual dedicated server is not bad. I am using it right now and it works great. You can control anything on it, install whatever you want. :)

I hear Rackspace is good if you want managed. But if you want the cheapest unmanaged dedicated servers, I think The PLanet still wins (formerly EV1 Servers)

Honestly, try Slicehost. Cheap VPS...Super reliable. You can do whatever you want with it and put virtually any distro on it. I'm using it to host two different apps and it's awesome.
Great community and great how-tos for the beginner / intermediate server geek.

look for some deals on softlayer servers... you can get some for cheap

If support is important to you, go with RackSpace. My main client is now with RackSpace and the service is out of this world, truly - even when we've got a query about something that is none of their responsibility they've endeavoured to help out where and when they could. Cannot recommend them highly enough.

@emecks
Rackspace has great customer service, though it's very expensive for what you get in terms of hardware. Slicehost's pricing cannot be beat and there is always someone, if not multiple people, in the Campfire chat room to answer any question you have.
Check out articles.slicehost.com. They've got some great how-tos that aren't Slicehost specific, but they get you started fast.

I recommend slicehost
I am very happy with their machines.

Another one for Rackspace - if you can afford it.
They have excellent support (PHONE!) and are very helpful. I use them now for a network of dedicated machines (file, db, web, load bal, firewall, etc).

I use http://www.superbservers.net but I'm a linux guru so just looking for reliable network (they have really good connectivity worldwide - and fast) don't really need the managed services.
