Is it worth ot from CS2. Thinking of getting the full suite of everything - but it's over £1K. Not sure I want to spend that much.
Will upgrade eventually, obviously, but is it a must have? Am mainly doing flash/web/PS/ILL work.

If you're going to upgrade eventually, why not get it now so you can get your money's worth out of it?
Just raise your rates to cover the cost.

not easy to "just raise rates" - although if I were selling electricity or gas or petrol that would be a different matter.
Fair point though. I will muster the cheque book and replenish the economy with my spending power.

Check Ebay for the software. I've found there's a micro economy of people buying enterprise level packages of software, then selling off the licenses individually. I've purchased CS3 and Quickbooks Pro in the past this way, never had a problem. Just do you homework on the seller. I bought the full CS3 Design Premium for ~$900 US

Over the course of a year, the price of the software is about one quid/hour. Bump your rates five an hour, and pocket the difference.
And what's not easy about "just raise rates?" If the client gives you any guff, you give them the lecture about increasing costs.
Chances are if you're worried about the costs of software, you're charging much too little. Or you're a student.

Neither - run a business with government contracts which we're tied to. It's impossible to raise rates in the way you say, since it's all about procurement and tendering for work. Not so simple as you would think to say we've put up our daily rate now.
