My dog is mostly a lump but she does like to play. She used to play with this border collie all the time...when they were outside they were fine but inside the border collie pushed my dog around all the time.

My favourite dog quote;
How can people love something so much that they're willing to walk behind it and retrieve its faeces with their own hands every day? I have yet to meet a woman for whom I'd do that.

My point was that you can introduce a dog at any time, regardless of age. If you treat a dog like what it is - a pet - then you won't have problems. The only time a dog is going to feel intruded upon is when it thinks it owns the space.
- true but you have to admit that an older dog that just wants to chill is going to be annoyed by a younger ball on energy.flashbender
- or maybe an older dog who chills is just bored shitless.ephix

Two dogs - if they get along - are awesome. I used to have two and now I have just the one and she seems really bored around the house.
The age difference for you though - having an older mature dog that just wants to chill and a young hellion, I'm not sure that is the best combination. I would say it depends a lot on the older dog. if it is still playful sometimes, it may get more active with a playmate. Or it could hate the intrusion.
Yeah, I'm really helpful.

moth and moural...
my dogs protect my house and my family. they know when i am 5 minutes from home no matter what time of the day i come home. they know when i'm upset or when something bad is about to happen. if anything...people don't give enough credit for their emotional capacity. that is why assholes like michael vick can get away with murder.

i have two dogs - they're great together. keep each other company/wear each other out so everyone sleeps better! :) it's great

I think sometimes we give dogs too much credit for their emotional capacity. If you just keep them in line, you won't have a problem.

thanks. peterorpete, I think this dog is a border terrier mix. she thinks she is queen of the hill...she'd likely push my dog around and in fact put a "I'm the boss of you" move on my dog within 20 seconds of their first encounter. I love those little fiesty dogs but probably not good for my dog.

i have 3 dogs... they're all little though so they kinda demand attention... very wiggly and energetic
my favorite is the weinerdog though... if you're looking to get a new dog, definitely look into dachshunds. they are awesome

Your dog would probably love a companion. When I got another dog, both dogs wehre inseparable. And now I have three...

- do you really have 3 BIG dogs?monkeyshine
- The black ones are big (coonhounds), but the one on the left is just a puppy. The yellow (approx. 35lbs.) just...blaw
- ...thinks she's still a puppy.blaw
- Er... the yellow dog, I meant to say.blaw

Just got my second puppy last week and things seem to be going ok. Rocco (8wk old Italian Greyhound) gets a little whimpery wen we go to work and Minnie (nearly 2yrs old Peke-a-poo) gets a bit territorial when it comes to our bed. But they get along and play fine when they're supervised.
It's a good idea to have two dogs instead of one, especially if you have to leave them alone all day to go to work. This link helped me decide it was a good idea to get the new pup:

We rescued two whippets a few years back and they are wicked. I'm terrified of the day one might be gone. Only downer is they are total tools when we see other dogs. They go crazy.
