I am doing some invites for an exclusive event and I want to have red foild around the edge. Anyone know if there is a proper name for this. or know of any suppliers in London that do it?

i think thats just a regular foil. It doesnt really matter where you put it. Its just a 5th color on the job.

Oh right.
I thought It was a complely different process as you have to put the cards on their side

You mean coloured edging don't you Dancer? Thats not done on press if so, and so is not a fifth colour. Coloured edging is traditionally done as a dye wipe by hand (for colours) or as a hand-rubbed gold flake applique on the exposed edges immediately after trimming.
There is also a kind of guillotine that has a dye reservoir for coloured egdes but its very old, rare and espensive.

Guilding...know people in the Bronx, but no London contacts, sorry.

Nice thanks Tim. Do you know anyone in London that does it?

Dancer, sorry for late reply but I didn't come back here last night. I would guess that most decent sized printers would know where to get it done but it would be a specialism at a finishing house rather than something done by the printer. The only London based source who might be able to help is Ian Bailey at Bookbinders of London.

Or... I have never used these people but they do a lot of prestigious invite printing...

There also used to be a printers in Clerkenwell called Form, or Forme, who ran lots of old letterpress machines and stuff and would probably have an edging/gilding machine but I don't know if they still exist as it was a few years ago that I knew them. Can;t find them on the Gooble.
Failing all that, you could talk to Emma Dixon at Urban Life support. She's Brighton based now but used to be print management for Newell&Sorrell and Interbrand. She knows just about everyone in print and might be able to help you. Slightly formidable personality but behind the speeding steam train front she's great and very helpful.
Unfortunately I can only find her LinkdIn account via Gooble, and I can't view her profile from there, but maybe if you have a LinkdIn profile you can view her contact details...who knows.
That's all I can think of. My old friends Generation press would be able to do it but they're not London based.
