I have an idea for a chess set and I want to cast metal for its pieces.
Is this doable? do you guys have any resources?
- JackRyan0
Yeah, it completely doable. I would only have resources in LA, but I'm sure you will be able to fins someone in your area. What type of metal were you thinking of?

the characteristics are dark and smokey and when you touch it looks like rainbows i guess from oil in your skin?
any idea what I'm referring to?
- No real idea, but I did see these in a catalog a while back. Sounds like a similar coating.

yes this is somehting that happens to petrol when it gets into water and stuff yeah?.... like a weird colored marbling effect.
Contact some universities and colleges and ask them to help you out, it may be good for them to practice doing orders and things for the real world a tutor may appreciate it :) also you might get it cheap he he but obviously students will be messing with your shit yo!.

Sounds like metal that has been plated with black chrome.

nice chossy. maybe hit up a ceramics class. they'd make the pieces in clay. you'd mold those pieces. let the mold harden. split the mold in half. pour mystery goo into mold. let harden. split mold off mystery goo. polish. then rip onto a dvd as this sounds total pornish and send to jackryan.
- mystery goo = my seed
I'm exhausted.
cries into hands :'(chossy

Great idea, but I'm guessing that custom pieces are going to be pricey to produce. I mean nice, readily available pieces are a couple hundred bucks. The price for these would have to be way higher, right?
JackRyan: Agree or disagree? I'd love to be wrong on this.
- JackRyan0
It depends on a few things. The type of metal you would cast it out of, and the intricacy of the design. I got two larger pieces casted out of brass, and did all of the clean up/polishing myself and it cost me around $200.00.

well the idea is the board would be the typical 8x8 square board with the squares being approx 3in.sq. so the pieces would be flat and somewhere in the realm of 2.5in.sq. and probably 1.5 inches high.
Any other material suggestions would be appreciated, maybe I could do two editions, limited run (costly) and not limited
- JackRyan0
If they were simple shapes, I think it would work out cost wise. I've never had anything plated though, so you would have to do some pricing on that. Do you want the pieces to be heavy?
- ********0
significantly heavy, for the low run set
