It will surely backfire - Obama is too good a speaker and can engender trust and hope in people like noone has for many years - throw shit at him, and he'll just catch it, put it down and wipe his hands.

I dunno, there are a lot of holes in the story
First of all, they accessed the info three different times...first time was a few days after Obama won the first primary..so in other words as soon as he became a serious contender.
Second thing, for some reason it didn't get reported at all even though it clearly should have...instead, the lower level person just instantly fired the people who did it and didn't tell their supervisor.
And apparently because of the way it works, the government is now unable to question the people who were fired, because they no longer work for the government.
So maybe it is nothing but you have to think that if they were trying to get the info even just to flesh out their oppo research on Obama this is the way you would do it.

he's probably grown tired of everyone rifling through his shit for smear artillery and wants to lay down the law.

I just got a new passport, and government ID that I had to go through physical exams, biometric analysis, and ultra-methodical fingerprinting for, and frankly I couldnt give a hoot who 'has' that information or who 'looks at' it, theres nothing that harm me from people knowing the intricacies of my left thumb, how old I am, or when my last tetanus shot was - it's pretty much public knowledge in that I exist within the 'public' and AM this information.
If someone can demonstrate any way that any of us can be harmed by having this knowledge about each other I might think differently, but in this case information is definately NOT power...
Folks need to smarten up with this dystopian shit, let the man have whatever he thinks is useful, play the game, act dumb to authority and get shit done under the radar wearing a suit and tie and smile, aint nothing gonna get done shouting in a big group with a sign and string in your hair banging a drum as you wander past starbucks waving at local news cameras.I have absolutely no idea where that came from.
- you are right, unless you want to go into politics, have a differing opinion than a group that wants to know more about you.mrdobolina

Same thing happened to Bill Clinton in 1992. There was a Congressional investigation that time...I wouldn't be surprised if there is again.

Story
CNN) -- The State Department has confirmed a breach on Sen. Barack Obama's passport file, his campaign said."This is an outrageous breach of security and privacy, even from an administration that has shown little regard for either over the last eight years," said Obama campaign spokesman Bill Burton in a statement.
"Our government's duty is to protect the private information of the American people, not use it for political purposes."
The campaign called for a complete investigation to find out who looked at Obama's passport file and why.
