BBC are switching to 1024 x 768. I think there will now begin to be a push to make this the standard.

i'd stick with 1024

Most people use 1024x768.

I still design for 6" when building real dolls

... whereas on our site 77% of our users have over 1024, and 25% have over 1600.
for what its worth
You really should look at your actual users, not averages.

Our site gets millions of hits a month (which MUST make me cool)... but whatever, ~75% of our users have 1024 or less.

hey folks...
awesome feeback....much appreciated...
the developer and i that are working on this project have gone with 1024, just to be on the safe side....
it means we've had to re-jig a few things, but the site should still look ok.....
thanks a ton guys..

I've noticed that there is a huge variation between global stats and individual site stats now.
Your best bet is to try to get some data on who is visiting the site you're doing.
As far as general guidelines go thought, I agree with Fariska, W3Cschools is a good resource.

id say you'd be fine between 800 and 1024

depends on your audience... can you get actual server stats for the current site users, or a very similar site?

most people who visit my website... have 1680x1050 resolution now. that ='s about 700 of my 1000 visitors on average a month. and the rest use 1280x1024. But I am an artist so artist's visit my site and it makes sense visual people have better monitors. I think I'd be interested in seeing the overall trend But i still think 1024x768 is fine. 1280 will be more appropriate sooner rather than later though.. imo.
