Thanks for all the links guys– I'll be checking them out for further reference. I have a project due in about 9 hours, was able to get it done using MrOneHundred's method (and marychain's addition). When I have to get more complex, those plugins will certainly be tempting :)

I posted a response to a similar question that someone had, before realising they were asking about patterns in PhotoShop. So, Filter for patterns and you might be able to find it.

it's a "little more tricky than that. ^
1) make a repeating pattern inside a square...make sure all the adge shapes tile to the other side.
2) make the square invisible...NO stroke...NO fill....send it to the back of your pattern
3) Drag pattern into swatches palette
4) It's a bit tricky...but 5 minutes of trial and error will get it done

I have done quite a few of these. Would you like me to email one to you?

you def need the plugin if you want your edits to update in applied patterns.

but its kinda pricey overkill and not necessary unless you're in teh textile industry creating patterns all day.
just create a template with a flood of your pattern on a locked layer behind teh tile setup.. line up exactly.. and then just reassign a new swatch with every tweak to your tile.
i've made some super complex seamless tiles this way.. totally doable.

You can update existing patterns by doing this;
1) Drag the pattern swatch to the drawing area,
2) Edit the pattern artwork, then,
3) Option-drag the edited pattern onto the previously applied swatch.
