personally I'd wait...if it's only 10 weeks till the next version is due, it's probably a good idea...
nothing worse than dropping all that change, only to find out a few weeks later that the new version makes yours a piece of crap...
10 weeks isn't that long...wait it out...
spend some of the money on some beers at the pub instead....
that won't really solve anything, but everything seems better after the 2nd pint ;)
cheers

Buy it before they start shipping it with new firmware, just skip their expensive contract. Now it's fw 1.1.4, fully unlockable. New models might come with new bootloader (deeper firmware) making them unlockable for months until a hacker figures it out (just like it was with 1.1.2 in December). This means, the older the unit, the more future lock-proof.
Where did you take the 10 weeks from? New models are unlikely, 2.0 is prolly just a software upgrade.

If it is a new model, there could be lots of improvements. But probably not too much that firmware couldn't help out with.

New version would be 3G and probably true GPS.

They've introduced the SDK and are launching app store, this alone is like a new phone. I doubt they will risk having two platforms on the market just when two billion apps are out.
What can they improve without risking this? Camera, 3G, more ram, make it thinner or put a better battery in it. Basically, nothing revolutionary. My bet would be on 32GB ram being the only change when firmware 2.0 ships.

But if you're NOT jailbreaking, then wait until June when you can load official apps.

wait. or just an ipod touch and a decent phone.

I'd go the ipod touch route kiddo! Yah still cant forward texts on to other people on it or pick somebodys number out of your contacts list and forward it on to somebody else, or even send pics of that hottie you said you pulled on Saturday night at the kebab joint!

no way they are going to do a 32gig phone unless they were going to release a bigger itouch at the same time.
- rafalski0
You can forward texts, and send mms with 3rd party software, jailbreaking with ziphone is a snap.
Touch is very limited compared to iPhone and still expensive - no camera, no mic, no loudspeaker (boombox, baby!), and most of all no volume +/- button.Touch's advantages are - it's thin + more ran in top model

Where have you picked up this 10 weeks from? Rumors point to a 3G version in Q2 this year with AT&T saying as much. That means that a 3G version probably wont hit the UK until Q3 or 4. O2 also need to complete a complete 3G roll out by the summer or they will be fined.
Personally, I'm waiting for the 3G model to come out before buying.

3G, and a better lens in the camera is what I'm waiting for so I'm holding off

iphone camera is pretty much useless
