very true jack.
a_iver, thanks for the good words. i am having difficulty narrowing my narrative and the top two logos seem to offer me the best ways of telling it. minimalistic or slightly illustrative. i enjoy illustration very much and it is a reason why i got into design in the first place. the logo with the diagonal lines came about as i was looking for something to serve as a foundation of presenting my work (which i have a very small collection of pieces worth showing)
i hope to have updates later today. thanks again everyone.

I don't know about you guys, but designing an identity for yourself seems a lot harder than doing one for a client.

I associate the second one with sails / a nautical theme.

Hey jay! Here's my thoughts. I think these are a couple of decent directions, but they're all so different from each other. No doubt it's good to have variety, but they don't even seem like they're for the same person. I think before you set sail on polishing up your logo, you should figure out the reasoning behind the feel of it. Then do a whole bunch of variations, select which one is most appropriate, and then make em look good. i know there's lots of ways people go on to design things, but i think logos are especially sacred. you'll pull it off, i know you will.

You could also make the height of the box a flexible item: so if your type is always bottom-anchored, and your box is always the same width, you could lengthen the box to anything taller than a square. Just a thought. Something that simple seems like it wants some flexibility and variations.

Don't use DIN, it's tired.

I think you need more options. The first is my favorite; the second looks a bit like potato chips (sorry, that's the first thing I saw).
I'd be interested to see what the first one looks like with all letters knocked out to white, but in a bolder weight of that same face (which I love).
I would also tighten your leading and anchor the whole thing at the bottom, so the space to the left of the D in DESIGN is the same as the space underneath DESIGN.
You have some kerning issues. You're way wide between the A & Y in JAY. I would shorten the arm of L a bit so you can get a cleaner kern there, and tighten it back in to the distance it currently has from the A. You might even want to make a ligature between L & A. Tighten the space just a little around your round letters to make it optically even.
Finally, I would make multiple versions with different patterns, all using that box and type. One could be argyle, another could be differentiated weights of stripes...try a bunch of stuff and then narrow it down to 3-5 variations for you to work with on all your materials.

Not the first or third. They are overdone and don't look great. In fact, they almost look cheap (no offense). Work with the second one or make a new one.
...and good luck :)

you need the KDU to put that bitch down.

its between the 1st and 2nd.

- 3rd = uninspired. I've been wanting to add shading to the second but have failed thus far.jaylarson
- When I saw the TypeNeu logo a couple weeks back and this week, it surely got me thinking how to make subtle gradients.jaylarson
- i started this back in november but realized i need a serious crash-course in flash to pull it off: http://jaylarsondesi…jaylarson
- i think what really made the typeNeu logo wasn't the gradient (though it certainly helped) but --->a_iver
- the idea itself (like a ribbon wrapping around like a candy cane). there's lots of lifeless logos that have subtle gradients.a_iver

hmmm... perhaps a reemergence of grunge is returning. *vomits ;)
The second one is where the most time has been put into. It would be tricky to use in a site, but deffo not impossible.
- Jaline0
I like the second one since it is something I haven't seen much of. Not sure about how it would look within a site though...

I like how the first one looks in the compressed QBN preview - it's kind of got a denim/material texture to it.
