Raise your hand if you're in the area.
We just arrived out here – after 5 years in Italy. Going to be working in the Palo Alto/Mountain View area. I've got questions about where to find a house, reasonably priced groceries (if they exist here), etc. Anyone have some insights to share?

e-pill, we were living in Milano for the past year or so, Savona the year before that, and Ivrea for a couple years before that. My wife is italian, so that explains a lot of it.

letters2, who are you working for out here? i am in working the same area.

I've been working with a startup over the past couple years that is funded through Allsop's outfit which has offices there – so they work out of the same office.

Affordable is hard to come by in the Bay these days especially if you want to live in the city proper. The most affordable stuff is likely in the Sunset or Richmond districts in SF, but at that point it might be worth looking in the East Bay, Oakland and Berkeley. Are you guys looking to rent or buy? My wife and I live in Berkeley now and my commute is into the city, easy on BART. Since you are commuting down the peninsula, a neighborhood like Portrero Hill would be ideal. As far as groceries on the cheap a combination of Farmers Markets, Trader Joe's and Safeway is the way to go.

Thanks draydog, we're looking to rent at first and certainly I've become familiar with the housing market in the bay area. I think we'll likely be looking for somewhere down the peninsula as opposed to in or just around SF. Ideally a small house, residential area. The quieter and more "rural" the better for us.
I got a similar tip on the farmer's markets – just need to find out whats around the Palo Alto area for now and when.

Thanks for the welcome. Funny, thats the third time in as many days that I've been told Woodside. going to have to check it out. The new position is sending us a guide this morning to take us out and show us some areas, so I'll see if I can get over there and check it out

My girl is helping out with a burlesque show and a short film screening at El Rio (great bar) if you are interested tonight at 7:30. I'll be there (even though I'm a complete stranger to you).

If I wasn't going to see High On Fire tomorrow night I'd totally come out to the El Rio, I love that spot. I'm too old to have more than one late night out in a row.
- that show is going to kick my ass. did you see them at 12 galaxies last year?vanilla_cam

the valley has pleasant weather but all of the culture is in the city. people make a big deal out of the commute but in reality it's not that rough. a semi crappy place in palo alto will cost you you 1700. it's very safe though (the safer the further away from East Palo Alto you get)
