If you were to give a junior a run-through of the finer points of standard typographic practices - where would you start?
I'm talking widows, leading, superscripting etc.
What are your rules of thumb?

I recently bought a little book called Twenty-two tips on typography (that some designers will never reveal). It has quite a few spelling and simple spacing errors in it. Oh the irony...
Or there is always the classic, 'Stop Stealing Sheep and find out how type works'
Give them a concise book

I had this one in design school.

Honestly, they should already know these things whether being a junior or not. This should have been taught to them in design school.
Typography was drilled into my head as a student.
- what size of the drill was it?akrokdesign
- 3/4" I still have the hole to proove it!czawada

the way i learned was with grided paper and a pencil, drawing out the letters into sentences from fonts like garamond, futura, etc. until i found the right kerning and leading

Grid Systems is how I learned. That and doing what _salisae_ did. Tracing character is boring as hell, but you'll learn so much about how the forms actually are constructed and fit together with one another.

Mark Boulton's site is quite helpful too:

First rule of thumb:
Refill my coffee, it's not the perfect temperature anymore.
