Hi all,
I have a 5 year old iMac 17" wide screen monitor that I am giving away to a charity that repairs and sends them off to developing countries.
Basically, I haven't used it for a while, when I try to now, I just get a grey screen, nothing happens. I have spoken to a local Apple repair company, it will cost more than I am will to repair, so I am giving it away to charity.
Now, they are collecting it tomorrow, but I wanted to somehow try and wipe the hard drive clean, the problem is, I can't do it if I can't login, is there any other way to wipe it clean, or even make it unusable. Apparently, the charity are often able to repair the machine, this is fine, but if my computer is being shipped the other side of the world, I just didn't want my files being accessed.
Can anyone help?
Thanks

open it up and swipe a magnet across everything inside.
- that really work?leewilson78
- no, the magnets inside the hard drive are a lot stronger than anything you are going to swipe across it. you could use an electromagnet but you would probably wipe out a lot more than the hard drive.ornj
- an electro magnet but you are likely to just ruin the whole computer I would think.ornj
- not to mention the knowledge and time it would take to build such an item, just smash the hard drive on the ground.ornj
