    http://groups.google.com/group/c…

This group is one of the main places we have been pooling information and lurking to get overall attitudes towards the concept.

I have been developing with 7 other people in San Francisco a new co-working space deemed Collab21. We now have an LLC established and are in the process of getting our ducks in a row with branding, marketing and overall business development. Its going slower then we'd like b/c we are all working on multiple things as well.

Any of the full-time freelancers or 9-5 NT'ers that also take on side gig's ever desired a place to work that is a shared studio space to get out of the spare bedroom in the house?

Just curious if i could get some feedback from the pro's here on what they would like to see in a collaborative working space... and if your in the bay area if you have any interest in possibly getting in on a piece of the space we are close to acquiring.

similar concepts to what we are doing are bountiful but we are hoping to do something different by combining the extensive reaches of the designer/maker/hacker community that is so abundant in the area. Personally i get so inspired by Industrial Design that i consistently daydream about going to classes at CCA or another local art school and changing my career path in that direction. We are hoping that filling a warehouse space with such varied artist that the limits of collaborative creation are endless.....

ok this is by far the lengthiest post i have to date and i am sure most will not read this far if even read this at all, BUT im sure that somewhere in between the "LEARN HOW TO TYPE" and "YOU SHOULD PUT YOUR FACE IN A PROPELLER" responses i will get some good could come out of this.... ok there im done!

those are all local shops in SF with similar concepts. The idea is to have a place to work around other Full-time freelancers or Small start up types that are in need of creative work space with the numerous needs we all have that are a bitch to cover by yourself.

The problem is that the success of a workspace is so well tied to its day to day culture. No one wants to be in an "office space" situation and for creative's it is very hard to find the right fit a lot of the time.

    like artist co-ops?

  • kalkal0

Ahh, I see what you mean. Yes, its a very nice idea but wouldn't you inadvertently, basically be starting a studio if you're a bunch of designers doing this? You know, art is all about individual expression and if you have a bunch of graphic designers under the same roof, in a little mini self contained, help-each-other community, you kinda are just a studio, right?

    • A lot like a studio but with the idea of not limiting itself to a Graphic or Industrial Design specific studio.

Yeah exactly. The problem with an artist co-op in an area like SF is that it turns into a very hippie centric "it's all about the art" "it was either this or get a real job" situation. We are aiming for a place that will allow for Benefits to be reaped by its members like insurance, accounting services, shipping dept for anyone that has products(prints, DVD's, merch...) and other needs that are priceless to the single person, but a lot of the time to high of a percentage of the daily grind then should be when your hours are better spent in creative/production mode.

Sooo... are you asking for an opinion? looking for people to join? I'm not following...

    • asking for both. very curious if anyone has been previously interested in such a space.

Also a main goal is to be a "for the community" based work space sharing the other similar ideas of the links i posted above. Allowing an out of towner or someone that wants to try it out for a day or two a place to come and pay 10 bucks for a days usage of a meeting space, kitchen and abundant office/workshop supplies. Its a really big jump from a day job to a full time self employment and hopefully with a varied group of creative's it will be a stepping stone to help people get out of the job they hate and around people doing what it is they want to do without having to apply for a job(or school) to be surrounded by those people.

    • $10 a day? Is rent that cheap there? I'd personally start this here in the UK if it were that cheap.kalkal

about rent being that cheap....Rent for a warehouse is well under $1 a sq. foot in many desireable locations around town.

The ides is that right now we have 7 board/core member's that wold cover rent with a max of 21 members being allowed "core membership".
Those members would have 24/7 access and a personal space to work. There would also be prices for smaller blocks of time to use the space all the way down to 10 dollars for a single day use.
