watched an Anthony Bourdain - No Reservations episode on vancouver.
looked nice. really, really nice. city looked pretty and clean, and the natural areas/forests looked damned great.
that said, i hear all the damned time online, in forums, etc, that Vancouver is actually: boring, crappy, ugly, and has more bums & homeless people wandering the streets than stars in the sky.
so which is the reality? are there bums everywhere? why? sure as hell doesnt look like it from afar.

Victoria is worse haha. It's pretty, and ugly just like any city. It has allot to offer but it does have allot of problems. The bums are mostly in Gas Town/China Town so I don't see them too often. The mountain back drop is sick and the beaches are pretty sweet, except for the dirty smokers and their butts that get's pretty gross . I've been to Toronto, Montreal, Quebec, Halifax, Calgary, Ottawa, New York, Boston, Miami and I think Vancouver is the prettiest even with it's quarks.

Another thing. I hate it when someone says a big city like that is boring. You can usually find something to do. Just look around.

You can pretty much do any outdoor activity you can think off with out having to drive more than 30 mins. The music scene is pretty decent and there is a pretty big hipster/arty farty scene.

I watch No Reservations all the time. Basically that show, Bizzare Foods, and The First 48 make up about 90% of my television diet.

id personally rather no reservations showed more about the city life, and less then the food. but bourdain is a funny cynical bastard.

I love it here. The outdoors are amazing. There are parks scattered all over the city with excellent biking and hiking trails. In my short time of living here I've have significantly more active than when I lived in the prairies.
Downtown can be sketchy but for the most part it really isn't a big deal. The climate out here is so nice compared to rest of the country that we just end up getting allot crazies.
- Like the quarter lady. I loath that woman.JKilla77

Vancouver is beautiful! The more I travel the more I love home! We do have the homeless problem and it needs to be adressed but it's mainly one part of town and can be avoided.

Vancouver is great. Yes. The downtown east side is depressing (I live down there) but the city is absolutely beautiful. The beaches are great, the mountains are spectacular, and I'm tired of people running the place down. I moved back here from Amsterdam and I'm so glad that I did. The design scene is small but there's some good work coming out of here.

why is it depressing? true 'bout the bums?
not like i cant handle some bums. im sure vancouver is cake to here.
- When you're dodging junkie shit (I'm not kidding), people shooting up in their foot in the middle of the street a 8 in the morning, the deranged screaming and flailing around, soggy food rotting in the street, that tends to get depressing.
It's all concentrated in one small area (Main and Hastings) the rest of the city is really nice. I was told that there are approx. 1,600 homeless in the downtown eastside.Melanie - in the morning and mentally ill people screaming at you it can be depressing.Melanie

The DTES isn't even that dangerous. If anything, it's just sad. I walk through the Main/Hastings intersection all the time and have never once had any problems. This might sound crazy, but I think the DTES has more character in its buildings than any other part of this city. Vancouver loves to raze its history. The eastside seems like one of the few places where the old city still exists. Sometimes seeing towers of glass and perfectly manicured lawns makes me feel like I'm living in a giant mall.
Vancouver is cool. If you like sports you'll love it here. If you want arts or culture you might be better off in Montreal or Toronto.

Have you spent any time there at all?
