poor eye sight

Hi all,
I am looking at how I can save my eye sight... I am a web designer and work at the screen between 8 and 12 hours a day, not sure if this is related but over the last 2-3 years, my eye sight has worsened... at a worrying level. My optician has recommend I see him again in 6 months, too be honest though, don't want them to get any worse.
I currently use a macbook pro with a cheap dell flat screen 19" monitor (or could be 20"), are there any monitors out there that are better for the eyes than others, perhaps Apples Cinema display?
Also, does anyone know if I should have a low screen size (1024 x 640) or high (1680 x 1050)?
Wasn't sure where else to post?
Thanks
Lee

I'm basically blind too. Saving up for lasik, hopefully that'll help for at least a few years!

just sit at a comfortable distance from the screen. use a high-rez, for gods sakes, but just expand the text size on any dynamic shit you read during the day (news sites, etc).
then, all u gotta do is every hour or so, stare off into the distance, out a window or something, let your eyes rest and unfocus for a couple mins.
thats all u need.
beyodn that, welcome to the world of glasses and contacts bitch.

poor viewing conditions cause eye strain and fatigue, which isn't so good for the comfort of your eyes, but no amount of fatigue will change the shape of your eye. like vague said, exercise your eye muscles regularly. your worsening eyesite is unrelated.

- thanks, saved me a bunch of cash on a new monitor, more rest sounds the order of the day.leewilson78

Make a conscious effort to rest your eyes and spend less time in front of the screen. You will get more done if you take longer breaks and concentrate harder when you are working, I've found.

wore glasses most of my life, its just got really worse of late, my eyes seems to always been bloodshot too.
I looked into lasik but they recommended not having it with my eye sight getting worse, I might need it again in a couple of years time :(

- How old are you? Usually eye-sight stops changing after you're like 25.Jaline

i always find it funny when people who only have marginally poor eyesight say they dont wear their glasses for long periods of time to "strengthen their eyes".
the shape of your god damned eye determines how poorly or how well you view everything. not wearing glasses for hours on end isn't going to change that for one shit-second. all youre doing is walking around with bad eyesight like a jackass.
- and i dont mean "you". but general people.who fit this bill.vague
- no problem, I am comfortable wearing glasses, just don't want my eyesight to go soooo bad.leewilson78

Take breaks.
I have the worst eyesight out of anyone I know (I think I'd be legally blind if I couldn't use corrective lenses), and I can't do anything about it. Maybe I will get laser surgery, but I'm kind of scared. I will wait some years before choosing that option. I want to know how successful it really is in the long-term.
- I think eye surgery can be good, I would personally recommend optical express (if in the UK). seemed like they weren't out for cash, like another well know place I'm sure you know.
I have just created an hourly alarm for when at my screen, I'll take a 5 minute break then.leewilson78 - Probably from years spent reading they type on the old NT site!creative-

Some developer guy at my work had to have eye surgery because he was in front of the screen so much –something about tearing his retina – I don't know the details fully. So be careful, and look after your eyes.
