keep your css inline, use tables, no bg images. that's it off the top of my head... read this for more:

use inline css, stick to css1 as close as you can...
dont use css2 or divs
use tables... hoo ray
you want to avoid positioning. (css2)
put a link at the top to link to a xhtml version that uses good css and clean standard compliant code

I use Fireworks , and I just roll with the exported html , I send out blasts to about 2000+ , never had a problem , also I sign up for a few news letters and I always check out there way of doing it. As fas as standards, I do not think there are any for emails
