does anyone know the deal with this shit? ive heard that keywords are not used and widely ignored by browsers and search engines, but my girlfriend is worker with some seo guy at her work and he keeps having her research keywords listed on competitors websites.
anyone know anything about this that could give me advice would be appreciated

they don't hurt. just make sure that the meta words you use appear within the text of the page (within context and links). otherwise it is a waste of time.

meta keywords are no longer used by google...or at least I am pretty sure I was told that in a presentation by http://www.mattcutts.com/blog/ over the summer. I believe yahoo still uses them, but they can't be of too much importance by now.
meta descriptions are still used by google but do not carry that much weight. However, this is the text that appears under your URL when someone is searching google's organic results so it's best to make it short and relevant.

thats what i heard about google too. i dont know why this guy is having her waste her time. she is spending a lot of time on analyzing keywords and shes going blind shes so frustrated with it

probably find a good answer here:
Google places a lot lot lot more emphasis on linking than keywords.

i personally still use the meta. now more than ever proper h1 tags etc with relative bold keywords and some emphasize tage. works very well, and no tables. sometimes i forget how to do proper html since i use pure css

nope meta keywords no longer supported by major search engines, meta description adds no additional weight and should be used to get your marketing message across.
fyi rule of thumb site needs to be 100 pages to have a decent chance
no external links (mask with rel=nofollow for google)
maintain targetted keyword anchor linkage within your text (think wikipedia)
no 2 pages optimised for the same term

I think the main thing people forget is: Have a good site.
If your site is full of crap it's not likely to get a high ranking whatever you do.But back on topic, i still use meta too, mainly out of habit though.
- thast what i think this company is doing too********
- yaypaul... good site doesnt mean good design tho. bet 90% of all web works submitted here mght look good but is nowhere on the search engines... its a different discipline and design has to compromise for seo success.trooper

Keywords:
- having them doesn't hurt.
- not having them will hurt.also "no external links (mask with rel=nofollow for google)" is utter bollocks, this only applies to paid or sponsored links.
- whats this rel=nofollow stuff?... never heard of it********
- the rel attribute lets you specify whether a link is related to your site or not,,, always use for any links that are payed..emecks
- nope WRONG added rel=nofollow and my seros went way up!trooper
- way too generalised to be of value, having some links that are not "nofollowed" will help you.emecks
- whats this rel=nofollow stuff?... never heard of it

which keywords or key phrases are used in the copy of your site and internal links and for external links (not meta tags) is important to achieving good rankings, so reasearching these words will provide a base or guide when writing copy. I dont think the research will be a waste of time if used with reliable keyword sources.

yeah i would hope her company is developing using standard xhtml and so on... i might get a contract through them to dev a new site. i recently switched to pure css layout (xhtml strict) and im actually surprised at how long i held off... its so much easier. but i work at a job that makes me do email layout and i have to think backwards and go, wait i know how to do this its a floating div, now how do i do it wrong?

The use of keywords in meta info is questionable, but, what's more important is to get them into your actual page content. Also, where possible, the descriptive text of inbound links to your site will increase your ranking if they include the same keywords.
Ultimately, meta or no meta, researching keywords is still a valid exercise.

Yeah. Most of you are talking basic webtech sense here. I have a few issues with one or two comments which I think are ill-advised and coming from an ill-informed pov. Lets carry on with the discussion for a while longer, and then we can sum up and seperate the good advice from the bad. Okay people... good work going on here. Carry on. I'll let Tom Cruise know which are you are nearly ready for peppered citron enema processing and advancement to the next knowledge nodulette.
