I've been offered my first freelance gig, but I've never done (paid) freelance work before. How do I figure out my rate, or other fees?

figure how much you spend @ the bar on a Friday night & that is your hourly rate - work 3 hours of freelance a week & your golden!

1. align your work side
2. count the centimetres you've got so far
3. Divide it by the Earth's diameter.Voilá.

i think we should have an FAQ on this site that consists entirely of how much people should get paid and things to do in new york.

want a real answer?
ok!!
What I do is first determine the 'realm' of which the project falls.
Print? Flash? Web design? Web Production? Video? Anal? Then I have a set of hourly costs (pending on the length of work).
If the project is going to be more than 30 hours... I usually create a project total as apposed to going hourly. That way the customer knows the final end-price... and if I can... I'll produce the work in 2/3's the time and make more cash.
Hourly costs are diff. depending on what you're doing (the items listed above)...
... for instance... I may only charge $50/hour for print work if I'm just doing biz cards...
... If I'm developing Flash... it's usually over $125+ /hour...
... it all depends on what the project is, the disciplines required for the project and the timeframe allowed to complete (if it's a rush job... I add 35% to hourly / project costs just to rape my client a little more).
:)
Happy F-lancing!!

Go get the Graphic Artist Guild handbook. Fantastic resource for not just money, but legal information. It's not the final answer, but it's a great starting point.

figure out what u want to get paid.
factor that out by an hour estimate.
add 20 more hours on for client bullshit.if ur outsourcing anyone such as programmers, get their fees first and tack a little on to it so u can make free money.
