Hi all,
I am trying to create some nice subtle gradients for my site, just a simple light gray to white, for some reason though, my gradients always look a little blocky, every so slightly.
I have tried saving as JPG (100% quality), PNG (both 8 and 24), GIF etc. all the same problem.
I look at some other sites and they look much better, is there something I am missing? I am using PS CS3 for creating my gradients.
Thanks
Lee

for print usually noise + gaussian blur does the trick
not sure if the noise is so good for 72dpi however.- Hey, that seems to be getting there, are the particular settings that you use, also, do you add the noise before or after the blur?
Thanksleewilson78

jpg 100% should match your original

I recall having a similar problem a while back... my gradients look good in authoring, but when exported for the web look shit no matter what I did. Take a look at your color setting in photoshop, that's what fixed it for me.

Yeah, they do match the original, problem is, the original looks a little choppy.

you on a flat screen?
- yeahleewilson78
- probably just looks blocky to you then, check it on a crtkelpie

You try doing them in fireworks and export them as gifs with exact rather than adaptive settings.

Don't have fireworks :( Do they handle grad's better?
- you shouldn't have any issues in photoshop to be honest.jamble

actually, post one of your blocky ones up here and see if we see the same thing (stab in teh dark I know, but you might as well)

probably an issue with the bit depth, gradient will help to blend it better... don't get why you'd want to check on CRT as some people will be on a flat screen too?
- older crapper flat screens I've used show gradients quite blocky, they just don't handle them well.kelpie
- not yours or my fantabulous Apple things of course, but you never know...kelpie
- Many LCDs (even ones you buy recently from supposedly decent brands such as Dell or I think the MacBook screens) don't actually support many colours, so gradients look really shitty on them.modern

Any tips for better gradients: The invisible kind!

post one! it'll help, honest.

Give your black a slight tint (say blue) and your white also (but different, ie yellow). Barely visible by eye, but gives the gradient more "colours" to blend through. If that makes sense... ?

Could always sack off photoshop and do it online ... http://tools.dynamicdrive.com/gr…

What monitor you usin'? Does it display 16.7 true colors or is it dithering (like all laptop monitors...)? Hook it up to a CRT and compare.
- I have both a dell monitor and my Macbook pro screen, don't get me wrong, the gradient isn't terrible, just not as good as I see elsewhere.leewilson78

quamb, I tried adding a subtle blue and yellow but whatever setting of blue I add, i.e. not a lot, it still shows through, are there some values you have tried?
Thanks
- post a couple of examples like someone else said, so we can check if its your profile or monitor settings734

In photoshop, the gradient just reaches a harsh colour transition, like there is no colour in between the slightly gray and white.

I will post some examples now... give me 2secs.
- leewilson780
- that looks fine.madirish
- not blocky at all. nice and smooth like a good scotch.flashbender
- agreed. looks fine to me.brains
