assuming youre a freelancer and can work anywhere... or maybe even not..
would you rather live in a hustle n bustle city like New York, where you're "in the shit", theres always things going on, you feel like youre surrounded by a lot of important people, and are basically immersed in a very active, thriving community...
or would you prefer living a very quiet relaxed little life on some island like Saint Martin, where sure its gorgeous and all, but its a small island and you're far flung from all of the happenin "happenins" of the world, and are basically out of touch.
i watch some of those damned HGTV foreign house hunter shows and these people get sick ass cribs in obscure islands, living this perfect little quiet life with their spouse..
..but then i think about how i love being surrounded by activity and not being disconnected from other happenins in big city life.. hard choice.
if you had to pick, pick.

City, no question. To do great design you need to know what's happening around you... understanding the culture and the pulse of society. My wife and I argue about this a lot becasue she wants to live in a quiet house, but the city is tops for inspiration and keeping up on everything.

this dude lives tucked away somewhere in spain and says he just surfs and designs alone in his little place every day.
sounds like the same idealized 'getaway' lifestyle, and works for him...
- the dude lives in barcelona. fu-sweet. who wouldnt like that.akrokdesign

I live in rural Connecticut 2hrs away from NYC, and I plan to move there ASAP. My town's population is 500, and it SUCKS. The city's where it's at.

I'd live in the country. I have well and truly gone off civilization these days.

i picked the #2 option five years ago.. no regrets.. no turning back.
but it REALLY depends on you and your needs.

ideal, just outside of the city. nice house. yard. garage and a audi rs4 parked outside. pasadena, ca. would be nice. but with a average price of $650.000, i dont see it happend at all. plus, those houses are not much of a house. more like four crappy walls and a roof. :P

I live in a 12 bedroom, 6.5 bath, 4 garage contemporary trailer in Mississippi. The trailer park I live in has 3 Olympic size pools, a moonshine distiller along with hogs & roosters running wild. I love it and would not trade it in for nothing. This is living...

best of both worlds, live in the countryside and work in the city. but hey, that's so easy in switzerland

Peaceful for sure.
Been living in London for five years and I've had enough of it. I can keep in touch well enough with the internet and magazines. Just saving up a bit of cash to buy a place then it's back to NZ and the countryside.

a photographer friend of mine who had a very successful commercial career in NYC but now lives in a very small city told me that when you are younger you tend not to be defined artistically so a place like NYC or London mirrors an image of who you want to be.
As you find your own voice and gain confidence, you are able to focus on the work itself, rather than the image of the artist/designer. For him that meant needing to leave the city because he felt that it distracted him from the work.
- I'm feeling this now. Wanting to leave the stimuli of city life.anzelina

I grew up in the country, I've lived in the city for more than a decade now and can never ever see myself going back. Fuck that.

I lived in the Country got bored and now freelance in quite a sleepy town but only 30miles from London.
When I do gigs in London I love it but am thankful for leaving after a 2-3 week block. My wallet is happier as well.
I then go back to see my folks in the sticks and what strikes me is the complete silence – it's bliss but only for a short while until I get fucking bored again and trundle off to the city. I have a short attention span you see.I would never 'live' in a city though.
- I reckon that's about as far from city living as I could get these days. I have a fear of being cut off that stems from my youthkelpie

this dude seems to live straight up in the rural area, and it looks to be quite pleasant and calm, and his creativity doesnt 'suffer' either..
- kelpie0
There's an argument that all the hustle and bustle and visual stimuli of the city could distract from your focus creatively and that the quiet life would enhance it but I don't think that's really your question here. Would you prefer the country for your quality of life? If you answered yes, then start planning to move. simple as.
