Does anyone use Painter for digital coloring and sketching? Is there any advantage over Photoshop?

I have Painter 7, but only because my uncle designed the cover.
:)
- Cool packaging, he did a good job.

this may not apply because I haven't used Painter. But I was totally disappointed with Draw due to its non-intuitive menu structure. It was just "clunky". I can only imagine Painter is the same.
Any options on this are totally appreciated.
- corel kills illustrator in efficiency and workflow. it does have some typographic shortcomings thoughalbums
- Draw and Painter are different teams, Painter used to be developed by Metacreations IIRCanimatedgif

I have Painter 9. I love how the paint interacts with the other paint on the canvas, but I always find myself using Photoshop instead , even though it doesn't have all the painterly goodness that Painter does. Maybe it's because I'm just more familiar with PS, or because painter always ran really slow on my machine... so who knows? I keep telling myself to give painter another shot. Maybe someday I will.

okay for sketching with a wacom, but it is overfilled with useless features and you end up spending more time adjusting them than using them
I use Sketchbook Pro which is the perfect sketch tool imo

And yeah, I use Photoshop all the time. I never use Painter. It's cheaper though, right?

PainterX its like a complement for photoshop... there are to many options with a wacom, download the tryout.. highly recomended.. Painter its totally diferent to corel draw... was buyed by corel, before was from metacreations...

I have an ACE app at the studio that I wish I could name right now. It was a $100 download from an independent little developer which I saw in use somewhere else. Its awesome. A simple little app but with Painter-like interactivity between pen/pencil/charcoal/chalk/feltpe... If you're interested in knowing what it is remind me sometime. I'll have forgotten by the time I get back in the morning.

I had a feeling Painter may feel more natural and painterly. I can see the disadvantage of learning another interface. I'll try the demo.
I've never heard of SketchBook Pro. Looks cool.
spooky, try to let us know what app that is if you can.

Oh yes, its called Art Rage 2. Maybe you've seen it. I first saw it on a tablet PC which it was bundled with. Its a quirky, clunky little fella, but it has a few good textural quirks that are great if used in conjunction with Photoshop. Its not even $100 its $25 so... GO GO GADGET HEAD. If lots of QBNers rush to buy it can you let them know Studiospooky sent you along, maybe they'll award me a prize like a trip to Hawaii or a cake shaped like some boobs.
- wouldnt you just rather have the boobs? you can get a cake anywhere734
- A cake anywhere, yes... boobs anywhere, yes... but a cake shaped like boobs? That's worth having.Studiospooky

That looks good from examples. Some look like they were done with real paint in the thumbnails.

I just got Art Rage 2 last night. It is pretty basic and there are a couple of tools that aren't as realistic as others at default settings anyway. Overall though the pencil, pallette knife and paint brush tools look and feel very realistic with a wacom pen. The brushes rotate easily, painting over existing paint blends and moves just like real oils. Painting seems much more realistic than PS unless I am missing something. The tools are easy and intuitive to access. It is easy enough for kids to use.

any more suggestions? i've just picked up ArtRange Studio (Above) and quite like it, although i can see already that it's limiting.

Corel Painter had a plugin or expansion I believe that allowed the user to actually paint with what was like oil paints, The paint would interact pushing itself out of the way, slowly mixing into a third color. It was quite nice and the results were something Photoshop could never do. That said, this comment is irrelevant.

that's what i'm looking more at, albums. photoshop is a retouching tool, or for creating/arranging digital elements and color correcting, etc - imo. i'm looking more for an actual painting software.
all the people i work with who illustrate/paint digitally use Corel, that's probably what i'll end up with, but would like to wet my feet a bit with something more low key before taking the plunge.
i've been playing iwth ArtStudio this morning, and am liking it.

I don't understand the comparisons between Painter and Photoshop. They are very different programs with very different uses.

"Real" watercolor added to the wet oil settings

Corel painter doesn't need a plugin for the oil-on-canvas effects.
I've not sued it in a while but I found it exceptional at what it does with simulating different behaviours.
