Any recommendations on external hard-drives? I haven't bought one for a while, I currently have a Lacie Brick... should I get another one to match? or are there much better ones to get?
It's for a MAC, if it matters... and I'm looking for 500gb+

Stay away from Lacie, a lot of friends had problems with them and lost all data due to that. I have two Western Digital 500GB MyBook's and had no problems (crosses fingers).
- had one of these for a while now, toostupidresponse
- I have heard western digital was pure shit.
im not sayin anything..... but im just saying.sofakingzero - I have 2 Lacie Drives and they have been great, have a 300gb brick and a 500gb silver one. and then some baby 100gb maxell portable thing.traut
- I have had nothing but good experiences with Lacie, but it's not an iPod, you cant toss the thing around...NONEIS

I've had Lacie's with no probs in the past, currently running an Iomega for full bootable backups (sans time machine) and no probs there either.

the problem with lacie is that they don't actually make the drives, just the enclosures, so you don't know what you're getting on the inside. we bought a whole bunch of them for audio editing workstations and they all failed in under a year.
seagate and western digital have been solid for me.
for the most mb for your $, check out newegg.com and get a separate drive and enclosure and put them together yourself. it's super easy.
- yeah lacie doesn't make the drivesmenos
- i secnod that for newegg but macsales.com also has some good stuff.menos

most come with the oxford 911 chipset which apparently is very good and reliable.
- that's what my next ex. HD will be, one of those.akrokdesign

Seagate or Western Digital.
I currently use WD.

another thing to consider is that seagate has 5 year warranty and hitachi 3. most others have 1-2 years warranty.

Maxtor - seagate owns them now, so you get the 5 year warranty. I've got about 10 of them, no problems yet (I did have to return one because it was defective, but I didn't use it so not a pain).
BestBuy has good deals on these.

I have a WD MyBook 1TB USB2.0, no complaints other than I wish I bought an E-Sata version. Kinda slow but I use it for backing up overnight while I'm not there.

I've had good experiences with Lacie, Seagate, Western Digital. Only drive that died was Apple Powerbook IBM Deskstar.
I always work on the basis that any one drive will fail today with total data loss (i.e. a good backup/mirroring strategy should protect you against that, so drives failing should be considered an irritation, not a disaster)

look isn't warranties on HD a little dumb. its really not the HD you want warranty on, its the stuff thats its on. so no matter if WD offer 5yrs. If I lost my stuff, then there no point. and most of the famous brand do have a fan in them and there bull that it dont need one. GET ONE WITH A FAN.

I buy wiebetech external cases (http://www.wiebetech.com/home2... around $119. and then got to tigerdirect.com for a Seagate internal, put it together in 10-minutes.
The wiebetech cases are tough and made well. Good Luck.

as a side note, my old Lacie porsche drives that stack and look cool, are not reliable.

OWC has some great RAID-1 (Mirrored) systems that I would checkout:
- ministack is good also...

LaCie's have Maxor inside them. Crappy. Stick with WD or Seagate (which have a 5b year warranty).

Seagate owns maxtor now, and both have the same warranty

From my experience I will never buy a Western Digital drive again. Their drives might be decent, but their customer service is atrocious. I'm on my third replacement drive, a MyBook Pro, and each one they sent hasn't work. I have had to wait 2 months for each time the RMA cleared and so that I can get the new drive.

Anyone have any feedback on iomega drives? I get a discount at Apple through my job, so trying to find one I can get at the store.

they are all the same, they all fail if they get moved around a lot or heat up, look after em, they are all the same, more or less.
