Before NY my laptop died with all content on hard drive. Looks like now my IMAC 24 died as well... Im a newwbie on Imacs, i had this "Freezing" problem at the beggining when i bought it. Always used power button to reboot. Today that happened again, and now, after reboot, it goes only till grey screen with apple and loader and then just switches off... Damn, whats that? Someone ever had that?
Im pissed off :(

Pull the power cable out the back to make sure it's definitely off, plug it back in, wait 10 seconds, hit the power button and cross your fingers (preferably with your eyes scrunched up a bit too)...

though this actually sounds like your logic board may have fried.

jeez, same thing :(

I had the same problem with my 20". It's an issue with the power board or some shit inside the computer. It's also apparently a very common issue with the iMacs.
Apple will cover it under warranty, at least they did for me.

I've never had a logic board problem with mine, but the hard-drive did screw up... Apple fixed it for free.
One thing – apparently they don't do free pickup for desktops, only laptops... UNLESS you moan a bit, like I did... then they'll hook you up.

look up zapping the pram, try starting up with the os disc as well hold down c when starting up with the os disc no idea how to zap your ram on an imac probably apple alt p and r something like that when you start up.... hope it works I had to take out my girls hard drive a few months ago as her imac died :'(.

i actually had a similar problem when i had gotten my new g4 many years ago. spent a week on the phone with applecare and they couldn't help me.
i eventually fixed it by opening it up and holding down a little black button on the board for a few seconds. Dunno how thats gonna work with an imac though...- that resets the PRAM, you can do via keyboard nowstupidresponse

Weclome to the Mac world. Frozen hard drives, fried logic boards and "geniuses". Sorry brutha. My advice to you is to use an external HD for everything and keep a folder with all of the software installers you'll need and all of your fonts. That way, when this happens again in 3 months, it'll be a lot easier to get back up and running.
- 7 macs and I've never had a single issue, sounds like user error to mestupidresponse

also how many beeps if any does it give?..... and how old is the computer and do you have it off for long periods of time?.... because it might need a new ram battery thingy?....
- senseg0
its half year used... 3gb ram. 500hdd... just tried to turn on again and still same problem.
- That is a problem. 3gb of ram. Ram should be in pairs. 1gb (2 512). 2gb (2 1gb). and so on.todelete__1
- Only if you want to dual channel the DIMMs. I've got a machine sat under my desk enjoying 1x128mb 2x256 and 2x1GBElectroLAX3000

- senseg0
no beeps at all. just a little "click" and turns off
- chossy0
also try reseating the ram.

try booting up from the os disc.
and once it gets going, make sure you install this app.

diskwarrior to the rescue as long as it isn't a failed piece of hardware. diskwarrior is the best thing i bought for my mac.
- chossy0
meaning your hard disc isn't recogninsed?..... try reseating that it's fairly simple to do as its an ide connection or whatever it's called, unfortunatly it may also mean the hard drive is fucked up yo!.
pour water on it.
- senseg0
the list is absolutely empty.

like I said you physically have to do this as in get a screwdriver out and go into the guts of the thing.
