I'm looking for somewhat quiet and not too crowded coffee shops that have free wifi. I used to live in Portland and there were so many great places to get work done - where are the great places in Manhattan?

i don't know any places where i can get any work done. most of them are so small and barely have enough space to use a mouse.
if you need a good quiet place in manhattan, going to nyc public library is not a bad idea. I liked the library on 34th and Madison. It's spacious, quiet and they have a space. they have nice work station with ethernet port and probably they have wifi by now.

i know which one you are talking about skt. it's between 8th and 9th on Ave A. their tables are small though, or that's what i remember. i used to go there when i lived on Ave A 7yrs ago.

Union Square Coffee Shop. After you've got there you'll realise I sent you to a noisy crowded place that probably doesn't even have wifi, but have you seen the sexy people they employ to wait the tables? SWEET JEBUS!

I used to go to Pecan for a while, free and fast wifi, power plugs available, huge tables, perfect from 2 or 3pm to closing time.

Also the library on 5th av and 42nd st is pretty neat, the room 108 on the 1st floor has super fast wifi when it comes to upload speed, always handy..

i never quite understood the point of working in a cafe...especially in this field. it seems to me a romaticized idea. I don't think i could (or would) work in a cafe, especially not the ones in manhattan.

because people with mac laptops are fucking retarded.
its like kids who take their acoustic guitars out to a damned park, perch themselves on a rock, and start strumming away singing sad songs.
its all premeditated bullshit. in the real world, a normal person picks up his fucking guitar from behind him and starts playing when he feels like it.
in the real world, a person does their work in a work setting, or at home. they dont pack up all their shit, lug it to a fucking cafe, slowly consume a coffee for 1 hour while getting 0% work done, then go home. no. only douchebags do that.
- such a good point. allow me to say that I've seen people on dells and sonys lately as well. I wish Sumatra in their keyboardPoint5

Vague, that's a sweeping and damning generalisation, and yet so true.
