People, I am so close to buying one. If I buy it before the year ends, I can write off for 2007 tax and i get instant gratification with tax return. However, there has been a rumor that they will refresh mac pro and acd. Is it worth waiting for 3wks? Even if they come out with the new, I probably wouldn't wanna buy the first gen so I will have to wait another 6month or so...
what to do... what to do...

ahh... the eternal questions regarding apple products... i feel your pain!

i'm sure you've checked this out already, but still.

"Don't Buy - Updates soon *
Notes * Price drops are the primary form of LCD updates from Apple. The 30" model last received an increase in specification in March 2006 while the 20" and 23" remains unchanged since August 2006."

it's been saying Don't Buy for like 6month or longer. Also, I am a bit worried about 23" size because it's been known to have issues. My other option is 21" Eizo CE210 and that's $1200.

yeah, I would wait for Jan 16th. They are going to put the new intel mobile chips in there. No idea about the LCDs (is that what you mean?)
I got a first generation G4 Powerbook and had it for 4 years with no issue.

Don't buy Apple displays, period.
What's the draw, anyway? It couldn't possibly be the built-in DVI cord or the lack of built-in brightness/contrast controls, or the lack of aux inputs...could it?
Doesn't sound too tempting to me.

I don't know about the displays, but many people have been saying that the dell equivalent is much better and cheaper. Have a look at the Filter for it, it was on a recent thread.
- tkmeister0
menos,
actually dell 24" uses different panel then apple 23". they are manufactured in the same factory though but the type of the panel they use are different.also, most of people don't realize that the brighter and higher contrast is actually not good for designing when it requires color accuracy and consistency.

i got one a couple months ago, couldn't wait for new models. there's not really any crazy new tech out there that i'd miss.
and the apple monitors are actually priced extremely well for what you get. try to find a 23" s-ips panel for under a grand, apple's is about the only one you'll find.
- tkmeister0
exactly. 23"ACD + calibration kit is still a lot cheaper than most of s-ips panels out there.

Dude, I would just wait it out. Just think about it - unless you can get some sweet back-alley bargain, I wouldn't bother.

I say go ahead and buy it, Apple retail has a solid "if we upgrade it within 30 days" rule, meaning, if they release a new one within 30 days of your purchase, you can swap it for the new one, the 15th is the most logical date for an upgrade, so I say buy it today and breathe easy.
- peteski0
there is NO Apple retail rule "if we upgrade it within 30 days" ...
Just checked.- 14 days is the limitpeteski
- that's what i thought.tkmeister
- The 14 day policy, is for a donward price adjustment, not a major change or upgrade, and replacement of a product. I know for a fact, from previous experience, that they will replace any hardware that becomes "discontinued" within 30 days, not simply refreshed or lowered in price. i.e. a whole new iMac design, or a whole new display (with an isight for instance).NONEIS

a 30" is going to look ridiculously big on my desk. i guess i am gonna sit tight and wait for January 15th. i can't wait to get more real estate on the screen. designing/photo editing is going to be so much easier.

Some friends at the apple store were talking about iSight being built into the ACD's... but that may not be this update. Not that that is a big deal, but could be cool.
- tkmeister0
iSight would be nice for macPro and iMac owners, but for MBP owners, it doesn't really matter.
maybe the case can be thinner, the hight adjustable stand, portrait mode, HDMI input, 14bit color processing capability, etc...
- kodap0
// off topic... but it bothers me the "mac geeky" thing. Everyone knows they're best on almost every hardware stuff... so why wait for X and Y details or configurations? if you need it, pick it up on the nearest store damn..
// end of rant

Just a quick thought:
How do you guys with MBP's w/ an external display roll?
Closed lid? Dual-screen? Macbook Panini Grill? Curious....
