for people living in oz, or maybe just seasoned travelers... which city do you prefer between melbourne vs. sydney.
im talkin someone who really enjoys diverse cafes & pubs and nightlife with good indie music scene, good culture, very liveable.. etc.

from what my friend who lives in Melbourne says, Melbourne is better. But I don't know myself.

I am interested in hearing soem responses on this as well. Been looking into Oz as a destination for a few years. But, I have also been looking into Adelaide.

I prefer Melbourne. The arts scene is bigger and the place has a more laid back vibe. Sydney is a big more corporate and busy. Its kind of hard to exactly put it into words but Melbourne is just some how cooler.
Sydney is still pretty cool though and plenty of night life in both cities. They are not that far apart, you should hit both.
I live in Perth but go to Melbourne and Sydney fairly often.

Take my words seriously, I bounce between Melbourne and Sydney every few months for work and living.
I find Melbourne more exciting in terms of culture, art, design and architecture (despite the fact that the Opera House and Harbour Bridge is in Sydney).
Melbourne is most definitely the place to be if you want to do some serious shopping, which I doubt considering you're down here to explore and discover.
So, take that out of the equation, you've got plenty places to visit whilst in Melbourne which the same thing applies to Sydney. For nightlife, I do kind of think that Sydney slightly trumps Melbourne but that may be wrong because I have friends in Sydney that is involved with a number of nightclubs, venues and bands- so, I may get the royalty treatment over there, not in Melbourne.
So, without any bias or hindrance- I'm telling you that you ought to hit both cities and decide for yourself.
PS: The surf is good in both states (NSW[Sydney] and VIC[Melbourne]) hahaha, couldn't resist putting that in!
ElPaulo, Adelaide - absolutely miserable (there is nothing to see, poor nightlife, etc). Apart from winery and cricketing.

Thanks Ravi! Good to know. I am just looking at the moment. Are you from OZ? Do you know what it takes to get into Australia regarding paperwork? How are the jobs?

thanks a lot. i have heard the sentiment that Melbourne is more laid back and has a quaint 'underground' vibe to it, whereas sydney is bigger, larger, and louder.. pretty interesting.

Melbourne = Lady
Sydney = Whore. They both have their pluses. Melbourne would be perfect if it weren't for their shitty winters

i like the bitch whore Sydney. Melbourne is more like a MILF.

Melbourne is definitely better. Although I have enjoyed a bit of Sydney lately. She can be nice. I'm originally from Brisbane.

Melbourne is more cultured ... Sydney mainstream.

how is brisbane?

Brisbane's good for a summer vacation, and only if you don't actually stay in Brisbane but go north. Brisbane is getting too busy for its own good. Crap traffic, etc.

Ravi - cheers for the rash generalisation of Adelaide. There is plenty to see, beautiful beaches and parks, and a decent music scene if you know where to go. It is completely different from Melbourne and Sydney, it really is like a big country town, and it should be seen as a place to go where you get benefits from both a small town and a city.
As for Sydney vs Melbourne - I much prefer Melbourne. Far better art and music culture than Sydney. Sydney is nice for a holiday, but I could live in Melbourne.
- no, adelaide sucks.ephix

I lived in blacktwon sydney which is in the western suburbs for 3 years.
seriously
sydney has a beatiful city no doubt
but anywhere out of the city?
CRAP HOLE
They try and beautify the western suburbs by plonking a new "nice" estate next to comission homes of mount druiit.
the only thing people remeber from sydney is the opera house and harbour bridge,
as for melbourne
the city aint as good as sydney but has a great lifestyle,
plenty of shops
peacful non crowded beaches
and you can dig deeper and deeper into melbourne and you will find so much to do.
i live in meblourne now, and for me its melbourne all the way

I lived in Brisbane and Sydney for quite a while each and have been to Melbourne on the odd occasion.
I love all but would probably choose Melbourne were it not for friends in each of the others. Its a little more relaxed than Sydney and art and culture is generally more fresh.
Here’s my 2 cents worth in order of appeal -
weather: Brisbane, Sydney, Melbourne
Chilled people: Brisbane, Melbourne, Sydney
Art/Design scene: Melbourne, Sydney, Brisbane
Music scene: Melbourne, Sydney, Brisbane
surf: Sydney, Brisbane, Melbourne
Proximity to snow: Melbourne, Sydney
Beauty: Sydney, Melbourne, Brisbane
Preference: Melbourne, Sydney, Brisbane
Also keep in mind Melbourne and Sydney are way bigger than Brissie so the usual population saturation effects take place for better and worse.
Go for Melbourne. But take an umbrella.
