400D, the D40 is a lower level. if you are looking for the equiv in Nikon then the D80.
I have one and its great...
- I have a 400D is what i meant. Its been great, easy to use and takes great picsantoine_101

Got yourself a D40x or D300. D3 is still very expensive and you need very fine glass to go with that.
The D40x kit is better than the 400D, the glass included is an overall good performer. D40x its bigger than 400D as a camera, feeling a lot better when you hold it.
Yeah, you will need to buy only AF-S lenses to have auto-focus, but you can buy a consumer camera if you need auto-focus.At least for starters, buy the D40x kit, a tripod, Speedlite blitz-er snitzer and a 80mm lens. You can spend up to $1500 for these, I guess. But look on eBay for lenses. You can find very good deals there.
Good luck!
p.s. Yeah, D40x is better in quality than 400D in any conditions. TRY to shoot ISO1600 with Canon in the night and see what happens :P
Overall, see reviews on both on dpreview.com, but go for the Nikon. It is simply a better camera.- Thanks for that, good advice. Having slept on it I'm swaying towards the D40x now...Raniator

If you intend to buy lesnes and/or a better camera down the line - look at those now and decide which manufacturer you like better.
Either price or qualilty-wise.
Then choose the brand based on that.If you don't plan to upgrade or add to your collection then just get whichever one you like using in your hand.
I personally prefer Canon's interface and ubiquity. Most of my friends shoot Canon, so it's just what I know.
Nikon's interface, to me, is rather confusing.

The best way to answer this is to borrow one of each for a day. I have a Canon and had the opportunity to play with a D40 and fell in love. It fits organically in my hand and I love the interface more than the Canon.

also from dpreview....
The D40X does well to maintain detail levels at higher sensitivities despite increased noise reduction, perhaps not quite as good as the Canon EOS 400D but better than the Olympus E-410....
don't spend to much time ready those reviews. splitting hairs and chasing tails......
- sikma0
at the end of the day if you layed prints from both cameras on a table you would VERY hard pressed to see a difference in image quality.
i would worry more about how the camera feels in your hand than what the noise looks like at 1600.
- demafleez0
if noise is a issue for you, which ever you choose, save up for a fast, whip ass lens to make the most of your investment.
a D300 won't do ya now good with crappy glass in front of it.

Ok, so it's looking like the Canon then?
The kit lense that comes with the Canon is supposed to be crap, is that always the case or is the lense that comes with the Nikon better?
Also, the Nikon has no lens motor in body. Does that really matter? Are AF-S/AF-I lenses loads more money?
- Also the fact that the 400D is nearly 18 months old bugs me slightly. Am I being a snob?Raniator

This is not a review site, but sometimes interesting for seeing real world use of different lens-camera combinations.

canon 400d is small in a very uncomfortable way if your hands are any bigger than a child's. Big disadvantage of both is the lack of inbody image stabiliser and effective dustbust system. You might want to also check out the Olympus e510 or perhaps the Pentax k100d/K10d or Sony Alpha. There is much more than just Nikon and Canon you know... don't blindly follow the company with the biggest marketing budget.

Oh, and you should tell us for what you intend to use the camera, that will help us advice you.calcio - agreed about the comfort - canon digital rebel xt/xti with a big lens and a shoemount flash gets uncomfortable quickly.bigtrick
- agreed, the 400d can be very awkward in the hands--the grip is just too small.Cultr

Raniator - the kit lens, despite allegations by everyone repeating what they read, is NOT crap. it is slow, yes, and the autofocus is also lethargic. however, stopped down sufficiently, the sharpness difference between it and an L lens cannot be discerned with an 8-megapixel dslr. this is something i've discovered for myself, having owned both the kit lens and a 17-40mm f4 L.
value for money, the kit lens and the 50mm f1.8 prime are the two best canon lenses you can buy.

D40x or just go with a D40. I know this forum has more Canon lovers than Nikon lovers so everyone else will tell you to get a 400D.
