I suppose it could be used to load something, but it's still annoying.
No one wants to click more than they need to.
Unless they get a kick out of clicking or the noise that comes from clicking.

i disagree. for the most part, splash pages are useless if your site is meant to be informational in nature.
HOWEVER.
if you are trying for something different - perhaps, an introduction to a new car (www.porsche.com/all/originmotor... - click a button and watch the intro) or something equally experience-led instead of information-led - a splash page/intro page would be the perfect thing to set the tone. not every site is built to optimize for fast information retrieval.
