Hey guys,
Crit my site - http://www.ianjamescox.com
Add my site to your rss feed if you like the content too...

No.

Not digging it one bit. Feels very much 'blog'.... probably because it is one/using the layout.

Thanks for the comments
Jevad - No constructive criticism to go with it?
Madrish - I've gone with the blog angle. Showcasing my work that way. I believe its a good way of generating new work.

The actual portfolio work is pretty nice. I agree that i don't dig the site itself. And that insect looks gross.
- Rand0
it all seems rather self-involved
- you seem like a nice enough fellow, thoughRand
- isn't that the nature of designers?

- Haha, I could look back in time and regret this....like a bad haircut!ianjamescox

^ but with that logic, it provides me with a very constricted feeling and instantly annoying way of looking through your work. i did actually, and i really think it could be done in a much cleaner way. the 48 column layout is not helping, IMO.

Rand - Thats a good point actually. I see what your saying.

I was overwhelmed by the home page and bloginess. If you could play up your navigation, it would help. I thought I had to sift through blog entries to see stuff. The actual work area is fine.
And please step on that ant.

Better to lead with the portfolio IMO. The more clicks away from the first page your work is, the more likely a prospective employer won't see it.

it's nice and clean. You have a particular color palette. It looks like a blog page but it works fine.

This is sure to generate new work:
"... Love going out raving it up with mates, following hot dj's and dancing to the new beats on the streets."- Too honest? Haha! oh wellianjamescox
- could generate more couch time too.doesnotexist

maybe drive people directly to the "creative" section instead of the blog when you are sending it to potential clients.
http://www.ianjamescox.com/index…Just a thought.
- When sending a portfolio I generally do!ianjamescox
- ah, well, that's good then. YOu have some nice work in thereflashbender
- monNom0
why doesn't it fit my screen?
- what res is that?ianjamescox
- 640x480monNom
- Really?ianjamescox
- thats why.. i have not sympathy with people with 1991 monitorsiwlyfel

your nav shouldn't be to the right, should be to the left. why is that bug there? why isn't your portfolio the first nav link?
I think you just need to really think about why people are coming to your site. I would keep the blog off the site completely, it's not very professional.
- I'm trying to build a friendly persona. I'd like it to be professional but warming too.ianjamescox

Your work is ace - but they way you show it and the restrictive template is is encased in makes it seem bland and un-immersive...
- thanks, designing for yourself is tricky as everyone here probably knows. hmmm...ianjamescox
- doesnotexist0
the third person/sometimes first person thing is annoying and trite.
- i do like your work, don't get me wrong.doesnotexist
- shit I thought I changed that!
3RD PERSON IS wrong!ianjamescox - changed, cheersianjamescox
- menos0
all of the above.
+1 = you seem to give the blog too much importance. you even mention that the company you work for has a blog. why make that particular note? it seems like something of a fad... (in this particular case.)
- alla0
To be frank, I am not sure about the way you present your work. The thumbnails with the drop shadows don't fit. Also, I don't like seeing the Safari window is distracting. And, the bug is buggin me too...
But your work is nice ;)

Not my cuppa tea really, don't really like the style of the site and the work well... when it comes to digital I like...

http://www.keepsmesane.co.uk/...but then it's all subjective, I aplaud your bravery to post work up in here, as it can be rough, especially if the core establishment don't dig it, then that tends to dictate the rest of the thread and boy it can get ugly, but looks like you've weathered the storm, although try again about 11'ish tomorrow morning (UK) that might be a whole diffrent kettle...
:)
