I've been asked for a quote for a site redesign, no problem so far but the client told me that he will require periodic updates on certain sections such as adding pics, news, etc. How should I quote those small updates? hourly? per update? a monthly fee?
- mimeartist0
surely you'll want to deliver something they can update themselves?
- Daro0
i told the client I could provide a cms so he could do his own updates but he said he's too busy and doesn't wanna screw up so he wants me to do it.
- jamble0
Quote per hour if it's small stuff, then you're covered if the update isn't so small.

Fair enough... quote him an hourly rate then
- Daro0
will do, thanks guys

Bump, do you just do your normal hourly fee? What if all he wants to do is change a photo?
- set0
Quote him a price for the website and then give him the option to buy pre-paid hours for updates. That way you can go in and just "change a photo" as above and knock it off his pre-paid hours until he needs to buy more.
That way you're comfortable and he's happy he's not going to get stung with any surprise charges.
- Do you knock off an hour for a photo. What if it takes a minute to do it?bainbridge
- this is pointless for minor updates. text changes and photo changes take minutes...fadein11
- 15 minute increments. How is it pointless and what is a better alternative?set
- You could even use the freshbooks timer and press start and stop and do it by the second if you're so inclined.set
- If you're clients a cunt then you could provide him with a breakdown of every second of every pre-paid usage.set

- < depends on what kind of r'ship you want to build with a client - I find if you help them out in small ways now and again the meaty stuff follows - don't really like the lawyer (by the minute) approachfadein11

- As I already suggested, some cunts demand it.set
- As long as they don't try to take advantage of you.freedom
- Most service industries charge in either 6 minute (10 per hour) or 15 min (4 per hour) segments. Your call.ETM

If I have a good relationship with a client and they are a good source of income I do simple 5minute website updates for nothing. If more involved updates I charge by the hour. Always charge by the hour if time consuming and a pain in the ass.

Quote it per update whenever you get an update and know what actually needs to be updated. Don't do hourly, never charge hourly for anything actually, you're screwing yourself (coming from someone who's been doing this for almost 17 years. You learn your lesson with hourly). However, provide them with sample costs for an example update to a section on the site.
- Base your costs on value instead.fyoucher1
- ha - so your costs are never based on how long something takes? weird.fadein11
- Neverfyoucher1
- Google it, many articles about this.fyoucher1
- that only makes sense if you are charging nothing per hourformed
- Again, Google it (ie. "Freelance value based pricing"). You're doing it wrong.fyoucher1

http://speckyboy.com…fyoucher1 - I did hourly for years when I first started out. Let's just say I'm super glad I'm not doing that anymore.fyoucher1
- We are talking about revisions, right? Not the website initial price, which, I agree, is a flat feeformed
- Doesn't matter, never do hourly.fyoucher1

Hourly, in 15 minute increments. Tell him it will cost less if he can send you a quantity of updates at once. That saves you headaches and saves him a few bucks (takes time to open, reorganize, etc.).
- what fadein says too, if it's super simple, like changing some text, give it for free for a good client, they'll appreciate itformed

mock = hourly < makes him think twice on 1000 revisions
build = flat rate < to be fair to him
maintenance = monthly flat rate < software updates n shit
content updates = hourly
SEO = monthly flat rate < dont skip on SEO's. without it a site is just about useless.

You said you did it using a CMS. I would create a maintenance contract (paid yearly or monthly / discount if paid yearly). Include in this contact CMS/Plug-In updates and X hours of updates per month. Present it as a package.
I do this now and it works fine for me. Any change is incremented in 15 minute blocks.
