For Web Design, stick to short courses.
I work with a bunch of people who went to uni and did IT / Multimedia. I still can't believe how far behind they were... fresh out of Uni and using tables for web layouts!? I had to teach them CSS!
Also don't focus too much on straight up reading/studying. Get some contract work and use that to implement new things you've learnt. That's the fasted way to skill up.
