I'm going to San Diego this weekend...never been there...anyone got any tips, recommendations, so forth...

Stingaree is a cool place and usually has some big time DJ's. I go down there annually for the ASR(Action Sports Retail) Conference. There's a steakhouse called the "Striphouse" which is good also. If you're not into meat or steaks the size of small infants and prefer the veggie approach, check out Laurel. Another awesome spot!

Make sure you take a quick drive over the bridge see Del Coronado and its beach. There is a hotel called http://www.hoteldel.com which is open to the public for drinks and outside dining. Nice spot for breakfast or lunch. I love it there.

I'm headed there in late January or mid February to go snowboarding at Big Bear. A friend moved out there in September and I've not been out to see him yet. Can't wait to ride out there, it's been a few too many years since I've been anywhere decent. Wisconsin doesn't quite cut it when I'm used to riding at Breck in CO.

Gaslamp district is cool. There's another place called Belmont (I think) that was pretty cool. Old San Diego was kinda neat.

If you want a real taste of san diego... go to a place called Fam Mart.

Please don't burn it down.

What are you into doing? There is a ton to do here. Me, I like snuggling up to my local dive bar and soaking my brains in Budweiser.
No but really, why you headed down here?

My wife has a medical conference to go to, I'm just tagging along...be there Sat morning - Monday night...not really looking too much at night life per se, more restaurants, sight seeing, shopping...

I agree with jimhop, if you are into steak and want to have a good dinner with your wife, check out the Gaslamp Strip Club. It has great steaks and you cook them yourselves on the grill. A really cool experience. If you have the time also, take a daytime walk around Balboa Park with your wife (hold hands for bonus points). Downtown is always a great place to get lost for a while.
- Nice. Nice.

Whoa, I forgot the Del Coronado. Great spot! I'm not sure if you and your loved one like sushi but there's this place Roppongi that has unbelievable sushi and service along with it. Comparable to Morimoto in NYC & Philly and Tao.

Some cool spots:
JRDN at the Tower 23 Hotel in Pacific Beach
World Famous in Pacific Beach
Subtext store/gallery in Little Italy
Nest Boutique in Little Italy
Stingaree in the Gaslamp
LG's Prime Steakhouse in the Gaslamp
Turf Club in South Park...lots more, ask the locals!

I second the World Famous recommendation...one of my personal favs, but make sure you make a reservation beforehand to avoid the wait. JRDN seems to have more of an asshat vibe to me. I also enjoy Indigo Grill in little italy, which happens to be literally right next to my office.
If you're staying downtown, go for a nice walk along the harbor. You can take in the SD skyline and pass the famous Star of India (the oldest active ship in the world I believe).
If you have a rental car, drive up to cardiff/encinitas area along the highway 1 to check out the beaches and get that surfer town feel.
A day-trip into TJ for some tacos and cervezas is always fun too.

madirish. I don't know the name of the hotel yet but I'll be working down in Foster City so I can only assume my hotel will be close to there. I'm kinda nervous. All I know so far is I'll be flying out Sunday night, maybe, and my hotel has been taken care of but I don't know the name of it yet and I have to rent a car and drive. Fuck. I hate that.
- oh.... Foster City, eh? well, not as cool as i said before then. : )
it is an easy drive though. you working on-site for a client?madirish

i was in a car accident in 1992 and i hit a NY State Police car and totaled their vehicle. the accident wasnt my fault, but since it was a state vehicle the court said they had to mke an example out of me, and revoked my drivers license for 2 terms [8 years] i had recently gotten my drivers license again and i had to re-take the road test and all that crap... i need to rent a car in Cali too!!!
im thinking convertable!!! or a jeep!!!
- trying to rent anything BUT a convertable in SD will be hard as hell. $10 says it's a 6cyl, auto, red Mustang ;)madirish

edd-e..... NO F*CKING WAY! From the age of 16-21 I had my license suspended for a grand total of 2 years 3 months. (Off and on, 6 months here, a year there, 3 months here) Sucked balls. Can't imagine 8 whole years. madirish, yeah I'll be working on-site for a client. I'm going in to give some support to an existing team having trouble with their site design, functionality and flow. I guess I'll be there alone which really, everything kinda sucks. I've only been here 3 weeks, don't know the company yet, don't know the processes and what not and I'm going out to establish a relationship with a client. haha. Craziness.
