Lenses for DSLR

The kit lenses will get you photos and give you the freedom to use all the functionality of a slr... Not a bad way to start, even if they go on to better lenses then its no great loss as a kit lens is worth about 100 bucks.
- if you really need a budget slr lens that will be of any value the 50mm f/1.8 will doversion3

Agreed, the kit lenses are fine for your sis/father.
Personally, am a sucker for prime lenses as low fstop is the best thing ever.
Not that this matters to most - though the real problem with crop frame is it widens your DOF, adding to that "digital look". Guess that need not apply if shooting happy snaps and landscapes.

Yeah Im a fan of the mad bokeh too but focal length and distance to the subject make a huge difference too.

the 50mm f/1.8 is a must have in my opinion...
