I've searched around on the process of general trademarking, but can't seem to answer my question. When you trademark a logo, is it necessary to provide a vector file to the trademarking office?

This probably isn't going to help you much at all... but you can't 'trademark a logo'... but you can register a trademark (which might include a logo, or a name, or both...)

and depends also where you are registering the trademark, which country, or countries... (you can register for individual countries or for groups of countries), some will have differing rules on what they will let you trademark, the name, the logo or nothing...

In the U.S. I've had to provide an 8.5"x11" .PDF with a large version of the logo, not vector artwork. This is at the client's attorney's request, not based on any research on my end.

You trademark a logo in conjunction with a name....it's like an add-on to doing business under a certain name, in a certain industry.
I've registered a trademark directly before (no lawyer) through the USPTO.gov site, they let you upload a JPG of your logo directly when you fill out the app.

Bah! You were right, ribit. I didn't help. ha!
Well, I'm located in Oklahoma and need to know if what's required from the designer to "register a trademark" for a logo. Just in case someone reads this that's ever registered a trademark for a logo in the US.
I've got a client that keeps sending me a shit logo that looks like it's been chewed up, crapped out and then scanned. But it's trademarked and I want to tell them to contact the person that registered the trademark. I'm just not sure if that person needed to submit it when they registered it...

In response to evanburke, how does the state of New York register Glaser's image and sue for infringement, if it's just an add on and not specifically enforcable? I just thought there would be some kind of vector document to refer to when disputes arise.
BTW, if you want to see the logo they sent me, it's at http://www.StingerWellhead.com in the upper right. The font's what I'm having trouble with; otherwise, I'd have no problem recreating it.

Who said anything about it not being specifically enforceable?
A logo is not REQUIRED to register a trademark, and is only enforceable under trademark law if you include it (add it on). Pretty straightforward here.

Also, the USPTO site details all this...why don't you just go read the docs and requirements.
