just curious, what do you guys use to access your files on a computer that's at home? .Mac? what else is there?
Dumping files on a HD to go between 2 computers is getting old.

i have my server as another mapped network drive on my comp for files that go both ways, store them remotely

i usually just turn my computer off, put it in my bag, and then turn it on when i get home.
seems to be working out pretty well.

Apple File Sharing active on home computer, and using dynamic DNS service from dyndns.org so I have a URL which is always updated with my current home IP address so I can connect over AFP.. Any attached drives also show up when connecting..
Just started using a network drive, serving everything on AFP, Windows Sharing, HTTP and FTP...

So does that mean you guys leave your machines on at home all day whilst you are at work? Tsssk.
- mrdobolina0
yes but we power our machines with hemp oil and llama manure.

So you have a 100watt machine running for the 9-odd hours you're away at work so you can have occasional access to files?
Cool. As long as you can justify it.
"choose detritus, because he has an opinion on everything"

why would you have files at home that you need for work? lol @ taking work home with you.
- ribit0
small business that needs to have offsite backup and occasional immediate access to like a terabyte of stuff...
I think my laptop with drive in sleep mode is more eco-friendly than using a car/train/plane to go get the files...
- skt0
you have a terrabyte of stuff on your laptop? that's a lot of stuff.

ribit, it's cool - if you actually use remote storage productively, I applaud, salute and congratulate you.
My ire was raised by the prospect of people leaving machines on at home all day just so they can transfer that snazzy new album they downloaded last night to the office..

i leave my computer on at home just becasue i can't be bothered powering it down. i leave the shower, tv and cooker on too. and like to keep my car running, just in case. it runs on coal by the way.

a grand carbon footprint might be the only lasting legacy I can leave...
- ribit0
oh I forgot to mention the 2 lacie drives attached to the laptop :)
(but they go to sleep as well)coal powered car... that would be sort of cool..

hey ribit, how does this dns stuff work?
I usually have files with me, but if I have to spend 2 hrs going back uptown then back downtown kind of ruins my day of work, so to have a way to read my computer at home would be great and more efficient for the business and my time.

I might be wrong, but I thought that computers use surprisingly low amounts of electricity - less than most other appliances.
I've also heard that, like lightbulbs, the majority of max. stress on them comes during start up and shutdown.
A few years ago I read a story about a firehouse somewhere that had a lightbulb way up high on the ceiling that had been on for 45+ years. It was never turned off/on in that entire time, and the on/off process is what typically burns them out.
