I can't believe there is a discussion based on whether led zep are good or not. It doesn't need discussing.
greatest rock band ever.

(Oct 23 07, 08:44)Yeah - but think of this: Rolling Stone only put Led Zeppelin on their cover for the first time in 2006. 2000 fucking 6. There was beef there and Rolling Stone sucks ass as a magazine (why yes look! Your monthly generational confirmation that Hippies Are Teh Greatest Evah! And The Boss Too!)

fuck rolling stone mag. Zep kicks ass.

I remember being a wee lad of 12 in 1981 sitting on my bed reading my Dungeons and Dragons players manual and cranking the "Song Remains the Same" LP over and over again...
Good times...

John Mendelson of Rolling Stone had "it" in for them.

Compared to...???
..and don't say Jesus and Mary Chain...
TheBlueOneGood Lord.....The Beatles, The Rolling Stones, The Who...take your pick.

Yeah, Golem IS the evil one. Right on.

Mendelson was a kinks man

(Oct 23 07, 08:53)Hmmm...speaking as a fan of those bands as well...
I think they have a better cohesive catalogue than the Who & the Stones. WHo & Stones had a bunch of "eh" albums, where I can't think of a single bad Zep disc...
I have always hated the Beatles - always preferred the Stones...so that's not even a contest in my book...

I am more partial to the Who myself. Zep is in a close second.

(Oct 23 07, 08:53)hmm, let's compare.
The beatles: changed pop music forever but were not a rock band so not really comparable. Plus most of the musical talent in the band came from George Martin.
The rolling stones: most overrated rock band ever. Weren't in the league of the blues boomers like clapton, beck, page. Just ripped of blues songs and posed (unlike the supremely talented zep who took them further)
the Who: I guess I'll give them volume, but not musicality.
Zep were the best session musicians in the country at the time. Page played on all the biggest sessions of the day.
They introduced blues as an influence as well as traditional english folk music and were the founders of modern rock and metal as we know it. Their influence can't be underestimated.
Just looked at how talented John Paul Jones is today, he's still improving!

(Oct 23 07, 08:58)I can respect that.
Actually go listen to the first Jeff Beck band album to find out where the Led Zep blueprint came from. Page just ripped off Jeff Beck's entire concept and ran with it. If there was the internet back then there'd be all these threads going "Led Zep: RRRIIIIPP!!!"

way down market mysticism combined with puerility: its really really bad bad verse. This is "Achilles' Last Stand"
....
Sending off a glancing kiss, to those who claim they know
Below the streets that steam and hiss,
The devil's in his holeOh to sail away, To sandy lands and other days
Oh to touch the dream, Hides inside and never seen.Into the sun the south the north, at last the birds have flown
The shackles of commitment fell, In pieces on the groundOh to ride the wind, To tread the air above the din
Oh to laugh aloud, Dancing as we fought the crowdTo seek the man whose pointing hand, The giant step unfolds
With guidance from the curving path, That churns up into stoneIf one bell should ring, in celebration for a king
So fast the heart should beat, As proud the head with heavy feet.Days went by when you and I, bathed in eternal summers glow
As far away and distant, Our mutual child did growOh the sweet refrain, Soothes the soul and calms the pain
Oh Albion remains, sleeping now to rise againWandering & wandering, What place to rest the search
etc etc etc.

I don't know Baskerville - you gotta give the Rolling STones and the Who they're due. Both great acts. The STones ARE an ensemble act - indiviually no one can really stand on their own in that group..but together they're a rock and roll machine. The Who wrote some of the best rock anthems ever - Zep never really did anthems per se...

(Oct 23 07, 09:00)It was jeff beck that named the band. He told jimmy page (his band mate in the Yardbirds) that his new project would sink like a 'lead zeppelin'
- TheBlueOne0
Jesus christ capsize you can't critique Zeppelin lyrics..they'er totally nonsensical..I mean what the fuck was Stairway to Heaven about? WHo the fuck knows, who the fuck cares, but thousands of children were conceived to that song. I'm just suprised that they're aren't more little children running around called Bustle" and "Hedgerow"...
And "Thank You" set my romantic expectations for my entire teen and early adult years..I wanted to find the chick that I could sing that song too...hahaha...

(Oct 23 07, 09:03)I thought it was John Entwistle that made the joke?
- BaskerviIle0
nah, I just can't respect the stones. They never strived for anything better or new, they just carried on and on, churning it out, they still are to this day. they will never progress.and their sound was always so small, tinny guitars etc.
The who wrote a few big tunes, but my dad loves them so I have to disagree.
- BaskerviIle0
ah, you're right. I was confused as it was beck who was in the band originally:
"The band completed the Scandinavian tour as The New Yardbirds. One account of the band's naming, which has become almost legendary, has it that Keith Moon and John Entwistle suggested that a possible supergroup containing themselves, Jimmy Page, and Jeff Beck would go down like a lead balloon, a term Entwistle used to describe a bad gig. The group deliberately dropped the 'a' in Lead at the suggestion of their manager, Peter Grant, to prevent "thick Americans" from pronouncing it as "leed".

Baskerville, we will have to agree to disagree about the Stones. I mean I do put the Zep higher, but the Stones where still great. There's a magical quality about the Stones - they're either going to be great or awful and you're never sure what you're going to get with them - or at least that was true throgh to about 1977 before they became a Brand and a Machine. But early 70's stones are classic stuff..
