It's hard to fathom the process that led to this particular choice of logo for something as important as the city of New York. It looks like someone just typed out the letters in one of Designershock's typefaces. Having said that, they probably charged 500 grand for it.

Seriously (and I know WO can't take full credit for this horror) I believe they inherited the original effort from another agency, and I read somewhere the client wanted the NYC logo (already designed by W/Ollins)but still the end result is clumsy, ugly, badly kerned pish!
Do they now base all their identity design on executions that are so so terrible, that it will get it's publicity through endless chatter on the InterWeb about just how bad it really is!
