I totally agree with you about Beck. He's been a hero of mine for a long time exactly for the reasons you stated. I gotta say this is amazing:

haha, blueone that's the track I was recording at the weekend.
I watched that film Across the Universe the othre week and jeff's version of day in the life was in the film, I knew it was him straight away. So I thought 'I've got learn/record that'. It's hard enough to get right with lots of takes, but live would be almost impossible!

Jeff Beck IS amazing because all though he doesn't have "technique" as it's conceived of within his medium today (he's no yngwie/vai type shredder) he is far more radical in his own minimalism. And he's gotten more radical the older he's gotten which is pretty rare in a commercial medium. He's untouchable with melody, emotional tone and nuance. Master..and those are traits you can certainly apply to any art you are pursuing..minimalistic in intent, yet hewing closely to original purpose -express the emotion, command of basics, so on..
The older I get is when you start realizing that those things are really what mastery in any field is about.
