With a friend of mine we decided to visit India. We will be there for 2 weeks.
I heard its super cheap and poor so i dont need to have lots of money? Where to go and where NOT to go?
Any advices about India?
Thanks!

its always good to have a large bag of candy when traveling to poor countries...you will be rushed by a lot of children, and candy is a good thing that you will want to have for them over money because once you show money its not just the kids that will rush you. plus everyone loves candy!!
get something like taffy.
a big bag!!!
bring toilet paper!!!
and a lot of immodium- d and also make sure you visit the Taj!!!

Ignorance runs rampant once again in the halls of NT.
I take it none of you have ever been there.

Consider going there for something beyond sightseeing. There are tons of places you can volunteer at there, and you'll get an amazing experience out of it, and end up in places you would have never thought about. It's a super diverse place so what region you end up visiting will be a big part of it, food-wise, language, customs, religion, etc...
I went there last year and spent a few weeks doing graphic design for this animal rescue org in a village north of Bangalore. And while I was there, I got to hang out with a sloth bear, witnessed the massive following of Sai Baba, visited wildlife sanctuaries, attended an engagement ceremony, and met some of the nicest people ever on a trip. I have tons of links for ya, just let me know where you want to visit. There's a huge experimental city called Chandigarh (sp) north of N.D. that was designed on this very strict grid system. Pretty interesting.
Don't worry about malaria pills unless there's a warning for your area, those pills are harsh. if you're vegetarian, it's a total paradise!
I'll stop babbling, but here are my photos/movies/field recordings from my trip:

I have friends who swear Goa is one of the best places in the world.

Nice mexist :)
I experience some of that stuff here in Canada every once in a while (in a very Americanized way, of course), since my family is from Sri Lanka.

mexist, that site is great

"super cheap and poor"
sounds like ignorance to me.
- mexist0
Yeah, that's a pretty general statement. Just go there, you'll see how vast it is. There is poverty, like everywhere else, but also the opposite. I would avoid Goa if you really want to get into India. Goa is the Cancún of India, if you just want to party with other tourists. Also, don't be afraid of the food, just make sure you eat where everyone else is eating. Not that empty street cart with no customers. I made that mistake and vomited so hard I ripped my throat lining, ouch! Otherwise, it's a vegetarian paradise! Stay positive and open minded...

i felt my comment was a positive one...i do travel all the time around the world for business and i do see a lot of poverty...but like you say there is poverty like everywhere else...and just because the lovals are eaating it doesnt make it ok for you as your metabolism and antibodies may not be used to what their bodies are used to...and i myself are not a vegetarian, so i do say its better to be cautious than not ignorant or however you want to label it..

I just got back. I was there for about two months.
Kolkata was the dirtiest place i have ever been.
Darjeehling was great...
Trekking in Sikkim was unbelieveable
Nepal is poorer than india
Varnasi should not be missed but expect a hassle.
Agra and the taj are worth more than a day.
Leh is the best place I have been.
delhi was exhausting
India can be overwhelming in the fact that the tour touts will be all over you. Expect it. Don't get mad. Just get away from the tourists....
I can't say that I enjoyed India. I was travelling alone and it was hard work getting from place to place and avoiding the hassles.
Thailand is the world's most hassle free destination but I think I learned more about myself in the 2 months that I spent in india as oppossed to the three years I spent in Bangkok.
have fun...and you will get sick like edd-e says.
- edd-e0
oh look how my ignorance speaks..
tonx much appreciated for that as now senseg can go ignorance free!!

good luck senseg!!
have fun and be yourself!!

if you can, download the bbc series 'the story of india' by michael wood, or buy it, it's really insightful and will give you loads of ideas.

http://manonthestreet.com/photo/…Senseg PM me for specific hotel and area info. I save business cards because I often return. My info is your info. I would definitely make sure to wake up at 5am and be first in line for the taj reflecting pool shots.
