Scarlett Johansson's album of Tom Waits covers is apparently out in a couple of weeks.

Well, it's always quiet around here at the weekend so any old news will do.

Normally an actor or actress releasing an album in and of itself makes me want to kick a puppy into space, but she seems to be really into old Tom, and has loads of respect for his work. I'll give it a chance for sure.
$10 says the album is described as "sultry."

Having heard her cover of Summertime I'll give it a go. It'll probably be a bit soft for my tastes but I'm definitely intrigued.

i was just looking this up... saw the track listing. haven't heard a few of them. should i dig them up first and give the originals a listen or do you think it would be worth it to hear them first as a cover and rediscover the tom waits versions later?
case in point i heard downtown train by rod stewart years before i heard the original. do you think being familiar with the original would unfairly bias me against the 'pop' versions? (for the record i like the tom waits version better, but it strikes me as being very un-tom waits in terms of melody)
i'm probably thinking about this too much but i'm bored and curious if any of you had opnions. if you could back in time and listen to songs and covers in a different order do you think it would change any appreciation of any songs or artists?

Even less impressive are the songs you can find if you search "Scarlett Johansson" in the iTunes store. Wow!
