hello folks! need some help: how much would you charge for a website? THe client is and independent publisher and he asked for a website with the following pages:
- index
-books and events
-blog
-shop
-web tv and webradio
-institutional infothanks to all :)
- Nairn0
what does any of that mean? does 'shop' mean an e-comm for an extensive ISBN database? does 'web tv and web radio' mean streaming?
you could be talking £200 or £20,000 here.
probably not the latter, mind.

sorry for being vague man... this is what exaclty the client asked for. 'shop' could be developped using paypal, he said, while I still didnt's get what 'web tv and web radio' mean... I'm gonna meet him today and ask for more info. btw he already wants to know how much it could costs...thanks dude

sounds like you've never designed/ built a site before.
Judging by the vagueness of the client I would say don't do it. Pass it on to someone that can build something like this.Ignore my words if you like, but come back in a few months and re-read this post.
Do a find for "I told you so".

Pretty much impossible for someone other than yourself to answer - there are so many aspects, we shouldn't even guess.
What you should do is calculate how many hours it'll take you X your hourly rate + 1,25% for client annoyance.

i get your point, but starting off with an e-commerce site and a content management system is a pretty big vertical leap.

(Sep 17 07, 00:45)jesus.. be professional. tell the client you need more specifications and then carefully calulate your hours and expenses. seriously, i get the feeling you need to learn a lot in this business.

agreed, its imperative you get the brief you require and get this thing properly scoped out, how else can you cost something as vague as this?

how long is a piece of string?
for each section of the site you need to find out exactly what he wants. only THEN can you give him a quote or even a rough idea of cost. his spec that he gave you could literally be anywhere between £2000 and £200,000

thanks guys, I'm just a beginner...again, sorry for the silly question and thanks for your suggestions...I'll try to get more specifications and yes, I need to learn a lot ;-)

Don't get disheartened. Enthusiasm counts for a lot. Don't turn out cynical like myself.

yeah, good luck.
all i am saying is that you are the boss when it comes to quoting that shit.

i guess hour rates is best for starters - but you need to consider some features are more valuable than others. e.g. database, php, cms, front-end, etc - updates, hosting plan, etc, etc --- jesus fuck this is a lousy job!

You could save a lot of time and hassle by using a couple of pre-built solutions:
If the pages such as:
- index
-books and events
-blog
-institutional infoneed to database/content managed, use something nice and simple like sNews (http://www.solucija.com/). It's free and a doddle to set up.
For the shop, if it's something pretty simple, why not look at plugging in CubeCart (http://www.cubecart.com) and then skinning it to look like the rest of the site. It's easy to do and again, it's a free bit of software the client can manage once you're done.
The only thing that seems confusing is the web tv/radio bit. Not really sure what to suggest there.
I'd probably look at about £2000-£2500 for what I've described above as it's a pretty straightforward looking job.
Hope that gives you some ideas to go on with at least!
