If the rj45 network port is faulty on a macbook, does that mean that you can no longer connect to broadband via cable, and also, does that mean you could not connect up to another server? (i.e the server at your work?)
Any info much appreciated.

it's your ethernet port, so unless you just use wireless (wifi or bluetooth), no, you can't connect really to anything. you can always go out an buy a usb ethernet adaptor and just use that.

For emergencies.. you could also connect to another Mac peer-to-peer over Firewire, with Internet Sharing enabled on the other Mac.

^^ what ribit mentioned works like a charm and is nice and fast if you're used to GB ethernet.
