The bulk of her money was garnered through her later involvement with Helmsley himself - why should the descendants of her first husband get that money?

I was watching Oprah once (really...) and I remember the very rich Warren Buffet did this as well, but he did it so that his grandkids would earn their own way in the world. He didn't give money to a dog or anything and it wasn't because he hated his kids. It was because he loved them and valued people working for their own things. His granddaughter, Nicole, was on the show discussing how she babysits for famous families (and many of them can't believe that she doesn't get any of her grandfather's money) and makes her own clothing or something to earn money on her own (not that she really has a choice, of course).
They compared that to Jamie Johnson whose family owns Johnson&Johnson, and how he got money from a very young age. Basically, Jamie mentioned that he is just as independent and creative as Nicole is, and that money isn't very important to him. If anyone saw his film, "Born Rich", you'll know that it seems he dislikes the lifestyle or at least the children it spawns.
Oprah totally called him out on the money he has, stating that ANYONE would be happy to have the money he has, and that this money has helped him further his film career. He dodged the question for a while but eventually he had to come out and admit that the money had a huge part in where he is today.
Nicole, on the other hand, claimed that she is extremely frustrated with Warren's decision to not give his grandkids any money, but also mentioned that he had good intentions (for the most part).
blah blah

if i had that much money, i would fuse their bone with a metal called adamantium and install claws in their forearms. they would survive the procedure because i would have spent all my money on research to mutate their cells so that they have quick-healing powers.
then i would leave them in a remote place in northern canada.
i would watch them from afar but never too close that i would be revealed.

^ damn, I bet they would suddenly be hot.

i'd love to have kids like that.
i just hope that they don't find out about me and come after me. hopefully, they appreciate how cool having claws are.

AH, another Bitch:
"Let's get one thing straight," he recalls her saying. "You are behind the counter because you have to work for minimum wage. I'm on this side asking to see the good jewelry because I make considerably more."
