I know you need a special adaptor to convert electricity to whatever standard we have in the u.s, but I was wondering if you could use that same converter for a laptop, or do you need a special cord? I would think you could use it like any other appliance, but I wasn't sure.

England (UK?) = US
rest of europe = input 220V in.
My laptop has an 19.5V output AC adaptor. Common app AC adaptors output 12V. You need to check this with your vendor to be sure.

UK/Ireland have the same 230V the rest of Europe has, only plugs are different from continental Europe.
There are two kind of adapters, one suitable for high power non-electronic devices - dryers, irons, kettles
The other kind is suitable for electronics - computers and stuff. Read what says on them.It is very likely that your laptop's power supply unit is universal - adjusts to available voltage (110V-230V). Most of these do. Read what it says on it.
You just need a simple adapter then, one that changes shape of the pins
