Need to upload an image and resize it

Need some help - I'm trying to build a small tool for a site to take a JPG, upload it to a server, and resize it to a standard 'full' size, and a thumbnail... just something to make my life easier, but I'm kinda clueless on where to look for this.
I saw a file uploader somewhere that used AJAX to do a nice progress bar, but I can't find it for the life of me.
Oh - and I'd prefer PHP for any server-side stuff. I'm marginally familiar with that, particularly since I also have to plug the filenames into a database (and I've only done mySQL work with PHP before).
