is it possible to replace a typeface throughout w/o going from text box to text box?

Look into styles.

This question leads me to believe that you've not yet discovered the Charecter and Paragraph Styles.
If you're really picking your fonts from the type box, and changing them each time you start a new text box, holy crap are you wasting a ton of time.

well, i'm modifying an existing document that's using a variation of a typeface i don't have (i want to change that). they didn't set up any character or paragraph styles... so, yeah...

When you open the document, does it warn you that you don't have the font? Because you may be able to change the font used throughout the document, but if there are no styles than I'm afraid you will have to go through manually and change the weights and styles. the good news is it's a perfect job for a new style :)

use the Find/Change command under Edit...
leave the spelling field blank and specify fonts under Fromatt settings.

I just learned something today. Thanks horton.

yeah, it lets me know that it's missing that font, but doesn't allow me to change it.
oh well...

Type/Find Font.../
from the menu, find your font that you want to change, then swap out w/ font of your choice from your list. This will change every instance of the incorrect font.

another way is to just select all the text boxes that you'd like to change, then choose the type tool and then you can change all thru the character pallette...
