I just heard about this.
A film called across the universe.
Looks like fun.

Yeah, Julie Taymor's new film. She is brilliant, but to be honest, my antenna went up after seeing the trailer a couple times. I really hope it doesn't turn out to be over inflated and pretentious. Using Beatles songs has a lot of weight and baggage.
Plus, I heard rumors of more delayed releases and major disagreements between Taymor and the backers (Sony?). So much so, she might take her name off it as director. I hope not.

Went ot screening last night, and got to meet the amazing Julie Taymor afterward.
I was totally prepared to hate this film going into it. I had a smarmy little attitude like 'oh so yer gonna interpret Beatles songs for me, eh?'
Honestly, the first 20 minutes didn't work for me, and some things really put me off and were goofy. However, once the film opens up I found myself totally immersed and loved it.
Taymor has managed to achieve somethign quite astonishing. Not only did she create an impressionistic and non-cliched collage of 60's counterculture, but she told a story unpretentiously and beautifully framed by reimagined Beatles songs.
She did private screenings for both Paul and Ringo, who both loved the film and gave her complete blessings.
Try to see it if you can, but dump your baggage if possible. :)

thanks for the info. I kind of hate the Beatles (really) but this film seems interesting. And Julie seems cool too. Lucky you got to meet her.

I'm really looking forward to this movie.

To be honest, I'll never see Evan Rachel Wood the same way in light of her relationship with Marilyn Manson. I know I'm not supposed to care about that or judge her b/c her personal life is supposed to be separate from her acting or whatever, but I can't help it.
Anyway, I'm still watch this since I know she's a great actress. And I'll try to ignore the other part.

Well yeah I know what you mean with the Manson thing. I was able to forget about that. It helps to know that this was shot 2 years ago, when she was 17.

No anti-Beatle baggage possible for me. I'm in.

Oh yeah, and Didi Conn (Frenchy from 'Grease') was there last night. It was funny waiting next to her to talk to Julie Taymor. Haha
