go onto ichat and we can have a chat with both the appications open at the same time and I can do a dummy edit as you are doing your real edit basically I'll mimic what you are doing at the same time and I'm sure we can figure it out, but honestly you must ne missing something really basic or the version is absolutely corrupt.

oh man.... hahaha
i started with the very first dv acquisition card, got it a week before the official release, it was $1200 and worked like shite.i ended up doing other stuff and am now getting back to video but basic things like that are killing the fun.
if you could be so kind as to drop me a line if you or an editor friend figures this out, that would be GREAT.
I don't always check the PVN.
cheers!

There is man it should work perfectly there is a way of making all the clips independant it's a basic function of nonlinear editing and the whole reason why it is called non linear editing, I started my trade as a tape to tape editor and have seen the progression of nonlinear edits suites, they really are a great tool when they work he he. Aaaaaahhh I'm getting all misty eyed about my old equipment my first edit controller he he
accom axial :)

thanks for the effort!i ended up trashing the preferences and going on with locking the tracks where the stuff i don't want to move is, it didn't use to work but is working now.
i can't believe there isn't a way to set things so every clip on the timeline is independent from the others and doesn't affect them.. guess i'll go to the genius bar some day and see what's up.
until then thanks again chossy!

that is a normal function by the way if you change the speed of a clip it will automatically change the position of the following clips by sliding them earlier if you speed it up or later if you slow it down, try de checking the auto select tabs to the left of your tracks it is a simple rectangle I'm clutching at straws here homie :/

whatever you do AFTER you have put your footage onto the timeline where you want it at TWO minutes, you then try to put stuff before it and it moves it?
chossy
(Aug 17 07, 09:06)right, and even stuff like putting footage on the timeline (say at 1:20) and then just moving it to 1:30 makes that happen.
or changing the speed of this clip will also affect where the following clips are.i just want whatever i put on the timeline to stay where it is no matter what else i'm doing!! arghghhhgh ;-)
thanks ninjasavant btw for the basic reminders, i do all that, it just keeps affecting the whole timeline no matter what.

can we clarify a couple of things.
whatever you do AFTER you have put your footage onto the timeline where you want it at TWO minutes, you then try to put stuff before it and it moves it?.... are you using the trim tool to adjust your in points ?.... if so have you made sure you are only trimming one side of the trim window.... really stumped on this one yo!!

thanks.
yeah i think my copy sucks, you helped me on another issue before, that i ended up figuring out a way around for,
but stuff that shouldn't be happening is definitely going on with my version..i probably should just backup/format/reinstall the whole thing.
thanks again man!

Here's whats happening, when you hover over the timeline you are probably letting go in the top half of the track, the icon looks like a forward pointing arrow, this is the insert command. If you let go in the bottom half it will look like a downward pointing arrow aka, overwrite. It won't move any of your tracks but it will overwrite anything it overlaps so you'll want to do the overwrite in a separate track just to make sure and then combine when you're done editing.
You can get more options by dragging your clips onto the canvas viewer, a popup will come up with options and you drag the clips into those boxes, youll see what I mean.

christ knows whats wrong with your program then final cut is very dodgy sometimes try this and start all over
http://www.kenstone.net/fcp_homeā¦
have to say I have never come across this ever, so from what you are describing I can only surmise that your copy is fucked.

thanks for the help chossy
the thing is, even if i don't drop directly on the timeline, the same thing happens as soon as i modify (extend or shorten) a clip that's positionned before another clip.my copy is legit so it should work fine..

get your manual out and look at over write edits it's the red commit button, you are using the yellow insert button therefore shoving anything after your inpoint forward the duration of the clip you are inserting.
alternatively lock your video and audio tracks you want to stay in place and then edit your new footage onto another layer and another audio layer, if these do not work your copy of final cut is broken and or you are not doing something properly and youve not mentioned it in your post.
- spl33nidoru0
tried that but it didn't work, even if said track is locked.
argh.

Try putting the track you want at 2 minutes in on another track above the one you are editing. Maybe?

help!!
how do you set your timeline in a way that whatever you move at the beginning of your edit doesn't move what's coming next ?
basically i have a 3 minute track i need to edit video to, i know what goes 2 minutes in the track so i take care of that right away, but then no matter what i do, editing the beginning of the track keeps pushing what i've done 2 minutes down the track.
FC Studio 2 if that makes any difference, thanks!
