    srsly.

Pisco is fantastic and to know it is basically gone now is very heart-felt. the people there are wonderful.

earthquakes are so very common in Perú, but this one was nuts. only 10k below surface.... crazy.

It lasted a few minutes too.
It sucks. I survived the '85 Mexico City earthquake and man, there's no safe place to run or hide.
    Best wishes to Peru.

The Last 24 Hours in Peru

At 06:40:56 PM an earthquake struck Peru. According to Peru's Geophysics Institute the magnitude of the earthquake was 7.9 degrees on the Moment Magnitude Scale and 7 degrees on the Richter scale. The epicenter of the earthquake was determined to be in the Pacific Ocean off the coast of Central Peru.

The most affected area at the time of impact was the Region of Ica, Peru - a region South of the Lima Region. Within Ica Region, the provinces most affected were: Chincha Province, Ica Province and Pisco Province.

The epicenter of the earthquake was reported to be 25 miles from Chincha Alta, the capital of Chincha Province. Ica Province was 65 miles from the epicenter while Lima, Peru was 95 miles away.

Panic struck when the earthquake hit. In Lima, Peru people darted out of their homes and businesses. A fire was reported in the district of Rimac and several houses were damaged in the district of Barrios Altos and San Juan de Lurigancho. In Chorrillos, fishermen desperately attempted to take their boats out of the ocean. Lima's Costa Verde, a highway which runs along Peru's coast, was completely covered in rubble and closed down.

A Tsunami Warning was issued by the Pacific Tsunami Warning Center, which in turned caused panic in the area of La Punta, Callao. An evacuation of La Punta, a peninsula below sea level, was begun. Citizens began to leave their homes and headed to Yahuarhuaca park, which had be equipped with special tents. Several hours later the Tsunami warning was canceled and citizens began to return to their homes.

The first casualties were reported from the Señor de Luren Church in Ica, Peru. A mass was taking place when the earthquake hit and parts of the chapel collapsed, killing several and trapping many. Two people were reported of dying of heart attacks in Lima, Peru.

Peru's President Alan Garcia addressed that nation last night asking citizens to stay calm and remain with family members and friends. Peru's President immediately held a meeting with his Cabinet of Ministers and began a plan to help victims in the Provinces of Ica, Chincha and Pisco, all located in the Region of Ica.

The President called upon all of Lima's people to help those affected in Ica Region, stating that thankfully Lima had not been affected as severely. As was done when Peruvians began dying of a cold wave that swept the highlands at the beginning of this year, Peru's Alan Garcia has reopened the National Stadium to receive all donations to help all those that have been affected in Ica Region.

Due to the fact that the main bridge, which connects the region of Lima to the region of Ica, has collapsed, an aerial evacuation of Pisco Province is taking place. Victims are being transported to hospitals throughout Lima.

Commander Arístides Mussio, Director of Peru's National Civil Defense, has reported that 80 thousand people have been affected by the destruction of 16 thousand homes in Chincha, Pisco and Ica. Reports on further destruction and casualties might change in the next days.

Peru's Armed Forces are currently doing everything they can to help. Individual states in the U.S. have also offered their help. The U.S. Government has approved financial and humanitarian aid and the World Bank has also approved financial support. Famous soccer players are offering to have games to raise funds.

It is reported that 510 people have been killed and 1600 others are injured. Neither Ica nor its hospitals are equipped for a catastrophe of this magnitude. What can we do?

7,9 is a lot of shaking. There was one around 5,7 in the US of Iberia and it was felt here in the Canada of Spain, right near the sea.

  • madirish0

maybe because you spelled it without the accent?

  • ethered0

that must have been it... yes it came up now....

accents always get me in trouble...

  • madirish0

my guess then, is that miami could prove to be troublesome at times....
